Far Cry 6 Why Antón Castillos Survival Seems Inevitable As Story Canon

[Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Far Cry 6.]

Far Cry 6 features two endings that see villain Antón Castillo either live or die. The default, “good” ending has his regime destroyed, but Ubisoft’s commitment to the Far Cry’s popular villains could see the developer make Castillo’s survival canon, allowing the dictator to return in future installments.

The “bad” and secret ending of Far Cry 6 can be triggered in the opening hours of the game, if players choose to leave the Libertad rebellion behind and take a boat to Miami. Three months pass, and Dani Rojas is seen relaxing on a beach, guerilla warfare left in their past. A radio broadcast in the background announces Castillo has crushed the Libertad, killing their leader, Clara Garcia, and plunging the country into a state of intense lockdowns.

The “good” ending happens after players complete the game’s main story missions. Having reunited rebel forces across Far Cry 6’s Yara to fight against Castillo’s army, Dani comes face to face with the dictator who has caused their people so much pain. Castillo intends to concede defeat to the rebel forces, and Dani promises to protect his son, Diego, but Castillo instead chooses to shoot Diego and cut his own throat, preventing them from facing whatever punishment the rebels would dole out.

It’s fair to assume the canonical finale is the one where Castillo is defeated, considering Far Cry 6’s lengthy campaign all builds up to ridding Yara of Castillo’s influence. However, the reappearances of the series’ villains could mean the “bad” ending is the true one.

Far Cry 6’s Reprised Villains Could Signal Castillo’s Return

Far Cry 6 Why Antón Castillos Survival Seems Inevitable As Story Canon

The Far Cry franchise has had some well-written protagonists and side characters, but Ubisoft has centered the games’ marketing around their main villains. Even the games’ cover art mainly features their villains, staring out at fans as if to suggest they know their place as Far Cry’s true stars. Far Cry 6’s Antón Castillo continues in Vaas Montenegro, Pagan Min, and Joseph Seed’s footsteps, serving as a terrific foil to Dani Rojas’ heroics. His motivations for villainy are tied to his fractured childhood, and actor Giancarlo Esposito executes the role with the level of charisma and ruthlessness fans have come to expect from the series.

Bringing back one of these antagonists wouldn’t be a first, as two Far Cry villains appear in Far Cry 6 in some capacity. Far Cry 3’s Vaas returns, despite being thought dead, in a surprise post-credits scene as the “Smuggler,” setting up a potential future with the series. Far Cry 4’s Pagan Min is also referenced on magazine covers all across Yara, though that game’s two endings saw him perish from a gunshot or an exploding helicopter.

It’s evident that Ubisoft values the popularity of these characters, and the company seems set on giving fans more of what they want, undoing Far Cry endings that proposed their deaths in favor of bringing them back for Far Cry 6. Ubisoft even revived Far Cry 5’s loveable dog, Boomer, after he seemingly died in the nuclear devastation of Hope County, Montana, giving fans even more reason to believe any of the franchise’s most famous characters can be saved from demise. Castillo could be the next in line for such a return; however, there’s one potentially major caveat to bringing him back.

Actor Giancarlo Esposito’s Popularity Could Hinder Castillo’s Survival

Casting Giancarlo Esposito as Antón Castillo was a big pull, considering how high-profile the actor has become after roles like Breaking Bad’s Gus Fring and The Mandalorian’s Moff Gideon. Esposito is likely in high demand, so it may prove difficult for Ubisoft to secure his return as Castillo in the future. It’s also possible Far Cry 6 simply already told the complete story of Castillo, so there may be no need to bring him back in the first place.

It’s not fair to say it will never happen, though, as Esposito may have enjoyed playing the character enough to clear his schedule if another opportunity to do so arose. The villain seems to be popular among players thus far, with reviews for Far Cry 6 touting Castillo as one of the better Far Cry antagonists so far, so Ubisoft might not be too keen to let go of the dictator so easily. As long as Esposito is available and willing, it seems likely the Far Cry 6 ending where Castillo survives – or an entirely separate, unknown continuity – will be made canon.
