Doctor Who Season 14 Russell T Davies Returning As Showrunner

Russell T Davies is returning to Doctor Who to serve as showrunner for season 14. It was recently announced by BBC that current showrunner Chris Chibnall would be departing the long-running sci-fi series after season 13, along with current star Jodie Whittaker. As of now, Doctor Who season 13 still has no official release date, though filming wrapped in August of 2021.

A lifelong Doctor Who fan, Davies ran the series from its initial reboot in 2005 through the end of season 4 and the ensuing specials, culminating in David Tennant’s replacement with Matt Smith. Davies time as showrunner is widely seen as a high point for the franchise, with Tennant’s years as the Doctor receiving particular praise. Davies also created the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Chronicles. He was replaced as showrunner in 2010 by Steven Moffat, who in turn was later replaced by Chibnall.

Now, after more than a decade away from the Doctor Who franchise, Davies is returning as showrunner. Per an official statement from the BBC, Davies “will make an explosive return to screens to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Doctor Who in 2023, and series beyond.” That phrasing suggests that Davies could be around for years to come, which also means that he could have a lot of influence in selecting the next actor to play the Doctor.

For those who’ve been following the modern Doctor Who series since it started in 2005, Davies’ return should be an exciting prospect. While the years since his departure have been filled with fantastic episodes and brilliant Doctors, his particular vision for the series helped it reclaim its place at the peak of science fiction television. Under Davies, Doctor Who pulled off an impressive balancing act of fun episodic storylines and larger emotional arcs, and he personally wrote acclaimed episodes like “Bad Wolf,” “Doomsday,” and “The End of Time.”

It’s possible that, with Davies returning, some of the characters and storylines he wrote could return. Popular character Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), first introduced in season one of Doctor Who, recently made a long-awaited comeback to the series. Under Davies, he and other older characters like Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), or even Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) could potentially be brought back into the fold. All in all, the future of Doctor Who looks bright with Davies back as showrunner, and it should be exciting to see what he does with the franchise this time around.
