Warning: contains spoilers for Beta Ray Bill #2

Marvel’s Beta Ray Bill is finally getting revenge on the Thor: Ragnarok villain who destroyed his home. Though Bill has more than enough reasons to want the monstrous Surtur destroyed, it isn’t the villain that Bill’s after, it’s his all-powerful sword, Twilight.

The new series Beta Ray Bill from writer and artist Daniel Warren Johnson sees Bill taking command of Asgard to defend against the King in Black powered Fin Fang Foom. Though Bill mounts an admirable defense against the monster, Foom’s might proves difficult for Bill to match without the aid of his hammer, Stormbreaker. After Thor arrives to finish Foom, the new All-Father is showered with praise by the Asgardians, who completely ignore Bill. Filled with resentment for the Asgardians, and shame for his monstrous appearance, Marvel’s most tragic Thor leaves Asgard for good on his ship, Skuttlebutt. Though he is content to just drift through space playing ping pong in Beta Ray Bill #2, his moping is quickly interrupted by the arrival of Skurge.

Having witnessed Bill’s plight from Valhalla, Skurge asked the Valkyries to bring him back to the world of the living so that he could help Bill find Odin. Together, the two find Odin in a bar at a dead-end planet. After a classic bar brawl ensues, Odin arrives, keg on his shoulder, to quell the fight and assist Bill. All Bill wants is for Odin to remake the hammer that Thor broke, Stormbreaker, which had an enchantment on it that allowed Bill to regain his more human-like Korbinite form. Odin sadly responds that he no longer has the power to make enchantments like that. According to Odin, the only weapon powerful enough to restore Bill’s appearance is Twilight, the sword of the demonic Surtur. Tired of being insulted and made to feel lesser for his appearance, Bill takes his ship straight to Surtur’s realm, Muspelheim, ready to steal the all-powerful sword.

Fans of the MCU will undoubtedly recognize Surtur as the massive fire monster that destroys Asgard and Hela at the end of 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. In the comics, Surtur is so much more than just a big monster though. Having Bill attempt to steal Surtur’s sword is a masterstroke move on Johnson’s part. Surtur plays an important role in Beta Ray Bill’s backstory, being the planet-destroying threat that made the Korbinites experiment on Bill and give him his iconic horse-faced visage. Bill’s inability to stop Surtur is one of the major guilts hanging over the character’s head. This is why Bill is so motivated to change his appearance back to looking like a normal Korbinite. All the experiments, all the pain, all the prejudice he faces, none of it was worth it. His appearance is just another reminder of his own powerlessness.

In addition to all the deep character stuff, it also means that readers will be following Bill on an exciting journey through the Asgardian version of Hell. Muspelheim is no soft place, and stealing from its ruler is no easy task, meaning that Beta Ray Bill, Skurge, and Skuttlebutt have their work cut out for them. Beta Ray Bill’s attempt to steal from Thor: Ragnarok’s Surtur might be the most thrilling and personal quest that Marvel Comic fans will see all year.
