BioShock 4 Setting Wont Be Rapture Or Columbia According To Job Listing

A job listing posted by the developers of the next BioShock game hint at the sequel exploring a new world separate from both Rapture and Columbia. It’s been thirteen years since gamers first rode a plane directly into the waters above Rapture, surviving the wreck to discover an underwater metropolis unlike any other. Originally developed by Ken Levine and the team formerly known as Irrational Games, BioShock was a revelatory new franchise in the Xbox 360 era, and 2K wants to keep the New Year’s Eve party going with the fourth entry under active development.

In 2014, after the release of BioShock Infinite, Irrational Games was restructured into a new studio now called Ghost Story Games. There haven’t been many words spoken about what Ken and his team have been doing in the intervening time, but it has been revealed that they’re working on an immersive sim and that it’s not BioShock. In 2019, 2K founded a new studio, known as Cloud Chamber, to start work on a new entry in the series. All signs point to the new BioShock following a more traditional AAA schedule, which means it could be on track to hit in the next couple of years.

First spotted by GameByte, a new job listing reveals quite a bit about Cloud Chamber’s plans for the next entry in the beloved BioShock series. There are several jobs up for grabs, but the listing for a Lead Environment Modeler specifies that the new employee would be working on creating a “new and fantastical world.” While one could easily describe both Rapture and Columbia as fantastical, the fact that the listing specifies a new world makes it clear that the next game will feature a new environment for players to explore.

The end of BioShock Infinite left an infinite number of possibilities in its wake, so it makes sense that Cloud Chamber would set out to leave their mark on the franchise. The listing also hints at what type of world that might be. This modeler would, “Create visually appealing, 3D models of natural and architectural elements based on concept art and/or photo reference while extracting the best / brightest details and exaggerating those to a point of caricature.” This description would be more in line with BioShock Infinite than the first two games, but any new entry in the series would likely have a brand new style anyway, simply due to the passage of time.

While heralded as a classic upon its arrival seven years ago, the passage of time has not been kind to BioShock Infinite that players once knew. It has amazing moments sprinkled throughout, but the city of Columbia doesn’t shine in the same way that Rapture did in the original two entries. If the world is to see a new BioShock game, it should be a complete reinvention separate from the games Irrational created. The opportunity is there to create something new with a proven formula, and here’s hoping that the teams at Cloud Chamber and 2K Games can do just that.
