Chris Noth Shares Sweet Story About Bonding With Sarah Jessica Parker

Warning: This post contains spoilers for And Just Like That… episode 1.

Chris Noth shares the sweet story of how he and Sarah Jessica Parker became friends while making Sex & the City. The classic HBO series following 4 women navigating life and love in New York City ran for 6 seasons, and its popularity inspired two sequel movies and a prequel series, The Carrie Diaries. Then, this year, HBO announced a 10 episode revival, And Just Like That…, which premiered in December 2021. Noth, who played opposite Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw as her sometimes-boyfriend Mr. Big in Sex & the City, also returned for the sequel series.

After Noth’s return as Big was confirmed, And Just Like That… episode 1 shocked its audience by having Mr. Big die in Carrie’s arms after a heart attack. Despite the revival’s initial mixed reception, Big’s sudden death proved again the hold Sex & the City has on audiences. The exercise equipment company Peloton released ads featuring Noth after its stock took a dive due to a Peloton bike’s involvement in Big’s death. Yet, as shocking as it was, And Just Like That… episode 1 brought Carrie and Big’s somewhat tumultuous relationship to a satisfying and heartwarming close.

After his character’s demise, Chris Noth had the opportunity to discuss his real-life relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker with Vogue, and unlike Mr. Big and Carrie, the two’s friendship is much more harmonious. Noth told Vogue the sweet story of how he met Parker on the Sex & the City pilot in 1998 after discovering a mutual interest. Apparently, he bonded with her over musical theater. “I think we bonded over Stephen Sondheim. I’m not a musical theater actor—I mean, in my dreams, I’d love to be. I’ve listened to Sweeney Todd a million times, and she’s a very astute student of musical theater, so when I started singing Sweeney Todd songs, she joined right in. And that was the beginning, as they say in Casablanca, of a beautiful friendship.”

Noth’s heartfelt recounting gives a look behind the scenes of Sex & the City. Because the popular series focuses on the relationships between its characters throughout their lives, it is only natural to wonder about the relationships of the series’ castmembers as well. Noth’s fond recounting of how his and Parker’s friendship began shows how strong it remains even more than 20 years later.

Actors who portray such iconic characters for such a long time are often conflated with the parts they play. Noth’s obvious appreciation for his and Parker’s friendship highlights the difference between him and his character. While Mr. Big and Carrie’s relationship was often controversial, Noth and Parker’s bond seems to be as wholesome as they come. Whether they like Mr. Big or not, no one can the chemistry he and Carrie had together. Perhaps, the actors’ strong friendship helped build that on-screen spark. To those Sex & the City fans still sobbing over Mr. Big and Carrie’s final farewell, this story is like a healing balm.
