Black Clover The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

Though it’s only been on the air since 2017, Black Clover has already entered the race for being one of the new kings of shonen action anime. It took some time to get there however, thanks to an overall slow start to the series and a weird adaptation that added a lot of filler to the early parts of the series.

That’s to say nothing of currently, where the anime has caught up to the manga and thus has been forced to do filler arcs until there’s enough material to adapt. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that several episodes of the series don’t have the best reception overall.

9 Nero Reminiscenes…Part One – 6.1

Black Clover The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

Nero’s past is pretty fascinating since it ties so heavily into the main story, but viewers had already seen it. This tries to delve a little deeper into it, giving a look into the past where Lumiere and Licht became close friends trying to build an equal society. This is all fascinating stuff but none of it happens to be very new, save for Nero eventually realizing Asta and Yuno might have the power to save Clover Kingdom.

8 Those Who Have Been Gathered – 7.0

Black Clover The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

This episode should be ranked higher; it’s a more relaxed episode where Mereoleona basically kidnaps Asta and Noelle and forces them to be there to celebrate the anniversary of Sister Theresa, one of the characters from the first season. It winds up being Mereoleona threatening Asta and Noelle into doing tricks to entertain Sister Theresa and her children, but becomes Fuegeoleon and Mereoleona getting into a fight, alongside Mimosa and Kirsch settling their matches as well. There’s nothing not to like about this episode.

7 Charmy’s Century of Hunger, Gordon’s Millennium of Loneliness – 7.1

Black Clover The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

This episode centers around everyone’s favorite tiny mage, Charmy. Her goal is to create food that can enhance magic, which she can actually already do.

But we see her going on a quest to find the right ingredients but everything quickly goes wrong. At the same time, we also get to see Gordon who wants to gain more power by leaving the Black Bulls but only lasts a few days before returning to the guild and realizing no one even knew he was missing.

6 To the Royal Capital of the Clover Kingdom – 7.3

Black Clover The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

The series had barely started and they were already doing some kind of filler. In the manga Asta and Yuno both wound up going to the Magic Knight Selection, but the anime thought it was necessary to see them both travel on foot to go to the capital, gradually going through different challenges and learning how to use their powers. It makes sense, but also feels like a filler.

5 What Happened on a Certain Day in the Castle Town – 7.3

Black Clover The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

The first mini-arc of the series wraps up and they immediately hit the breaks rather than speeding up. Asta and the others head back to learn the Black Bulls received a star for their work, but learn that they’re often inflicting so much destruction that they have negative stars. The rest of the episode veers into filler, with everyone heading into town to throw money away. It’s a fun character episode, but it’s too soon for one when fans are looking for more backstory on the characters.

4 The Eye of the Midnight Sun’s Secret – 7.4

Black Clover The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

One of a couple of recap episodes, having this here almost isn’t fair. It starts talking about everything the Eye of the Midnight Sun had done up until this point in the series.

It also reminds viewers about the location of the magic stones, which are being hunted by the Midnight Sun for reasons the viewers had no idea of; at least, not at the time. Recap episodes are always boring, and having one when the anime is so far ahead of the manga is weird.

3 The Man Named Fanzell – 7.5

Black Clover The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

This episode gave an introduction to Fanzell Kruger, a powerful mage swordsman. Fanzell turns out to be the person who helped Asta learn how to use a sword, which is why he’s fairly competent with them. Viewers also learn that Fanzell is actually from the Diamond Kingdom, folding in a bit more conflict between all the different factions that exist on that continent.

2 The Wizard King Saw – 7.5

Black Clover The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

This is actually not a filler episode, even though some fans might feel like it is. The story involves Asta and Sekke tracking down a thief who stole a woman’s purse. Or at least, that’s what they believe they’re doing, as viewers are instead shown the woman was actually Julius Novachrono, the magic-obsessed Wizard King. The filler part comes when they introduce an entire mission for Yuno and his Magic Knight squad to go on, something that never happened in the original manga.

1 The Boys’ Promise – 7.5

This episode really drags out some of the worst parts of the early portion of Black Clover. It shows the basis of Yuno and Asta’s relationship, when they were initially much younger and wound up fighting against a thief to recover Yuno’s neckless. It’s a lengthy backstory that runs an entire episode before wrapping up the first episode’s main plot. It’s not a bad episode, but it’s by no means a necessary watch.
