Originally slated for release on June 30th, Compile Heart, Inc. reveals that its upcoming JRPG Black Rose Valkyrie will not be complete in time for its planned release date.

After years of no major JRPGs being planned by major developers, Japanese RPGs are starting to make a comeback. However, they still have a long way to go before they become the dominating force of the video game market that they once were. Unfortunately, one seemingly strong entry to the genre has been delayed, though the decision behind it may ultimately provide a better gaming experience.

Developer Compile Heart, Inc. has announced that its upcoming JRPG, Black Rose Valkyrie, will be delayed from its initially promised release date. Rather than releasing on June 30th, the PlayStation 4 exclusive title has now been pushed back by three weeks to July 21st. Compile Heart, Inc. has apologized for the delay, but the only reason offered is that it was necessary in order to improve the quality of the game.

Black Rose Valkyrie is based in the first half of the 20th Century, focusing on a team of characters from the Secret Special Force Valkyrie, a portion of the Military Agency Anti Chimera Intercept Division. The team’s ultimate goal is to control an outbreak of the “Chimera Virus” that originated from a meteor. The game will have traditional turn-based mechanic JRPG roots, like many of the best JRPGs ever made. However, it also has some unique aspects that it will bring to the table.

Black Rose Valkyrie will feature a mechanic where one of the player’s five supporting heroine characters will be a traitor to the cause. Each playthrough will randomly choose a supporting character to be the traitor, promising a unique gameplay experience each time. Beating the game will require not only beating back the Chimera assault, but successfully handling the internal problem, as well.

The delay of the game may irritate some JRPG fans, especially since fans of the genre have already been subjected the years of waiting that numerous delays of Final Fantasy XV have brought. One can only hope that the Compile Heart, Inc. can fix whatever it is about the game that isn’t living up to expectations in just three weeks. There haven’t been any announcements yet on the title being localized to the U.S. or other English-speaking territories, and it will need to perform well in Japan in order for publishers to want to put the time and money into localizing it.

Black Rose Valkyrie is set to release on July 21st exclusively for PlayStation 4.
