Blizzard has confirmed that it’s looking into adding cross-play to its blockbuster, team-based shooter Overwatch–although there’s currently no final verdict on the addition of the feature. A number of games have been rolling out support for cross-play in their titles as of late. For example, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to feature it prominently at launch, while PUBG only just added cross-play on consoles with its latest update. Things are really starting to line up for players that don’t want their multiplayer experiences limited to the console they choose to play on.
Cross-play as an industry initiative was only pushed further after Sony confirmed that PlayStation’s cross-play beta had ended and it was now a feature widely available for use by developers. This likely means that more games will allow players across PS4, Switch, and Xbox One to duke it out with one another. Of course, Overwatch (one of the most popular shooters around) has yet to have any official verdicts made by Blizzard on whether or not it would support cross-play.
During a discussion between Overwatch principal producer Wes Yanagi and GameSpot, it was confirmed that the team at Blizzard was considering implementing cross-play. Yanagi admitted that the process of implementing cross-platform play would be difficult at best. Still, he’d love to see it happen since it’s great for the players, of which Yanagi is also one.
“Cross-play is something that would definitely be compelling for players, and as a player, I would love to see it happen. The truth is that implementing cross-play for Overwatch is more difficult than people realise.”
Blizzard is currently carefully exploring the possibility now that it is becoming more of a common practice within the industry. While there was no announcement to be made, Yanagi confirmed as much during the interview, stating “we are exploring how to bring [cross-play] to Overwatch, but do not have anything to share at this time.”
Blizzard has been busy broadening Overwatch’s horizons by reaching out to a new audience through seasonal events, new characters (like the recently released Sigma), and the game’s appearance on a new platform. In particular, Nintendo fans are sure to have already marked their calendars for October 15th, which is when Overwatch finally arrives on Switch. Now, if only Blizzard could have cross-platform account syncing…
