Boss Baby 2 Releases In Theaters & Streaming On The Same Day

Universal Pictures moved up the released date of the animated film The Boss Baby: Family Business and announced the sequel would launch on Peacock the same day. The release date for the sequel to 2017’s The Boss Baby has been moved around a bit, originally set to debut in March 2021 before it was pushed back to September 2021. Tim McGrath is returning to direct, and DreamWorks Animation will produce the sequel.

The Boss Baby may have gotten mixed reviews following its 2017 release for being a pretty generic animated kids film, but it was a box office success. The film raked in over $527 million worldwide and knocked Beauty and the Beast out of the top slot for two weeks in a row. The sequel will follow the one-time boss babies Tim (voiced by James Marsden) and Ted (voiced by Alec Baldwin), who become estranged as adults. However, a new family business and new boss baby Tina (voiced by Amy Sedaris) around might be enough to bring them back together.

According to Variety, The Boss Baby: Family Business will arrive ahead of schedule and will premiere on July 2. And it will be the first title from Universal to open both in theaters and simultaneously on Peacock, the new streaming service on the block owned by NBCUniversal. The sequel will also roll out internationally on July 2 in theaters, but Peacock has yet to launch outside of the U.S. Universal president of domestic distribution Jim Orr made a statement about the early release.

“Families are at the heart of our decision today to make DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby: Family Business available to everyone this July Fourth weekend, and to give those families the freedom to choose whether to see this joyful, hilarious and heartfelt film from a big-screen theater seat or from the comfort of their own homes on Peacock.”

Universal greenlit the sequel following the widespread success of the original Boss Baby, and it’s continuing to add some new big-name actors to its vocal cast. Joining Marsden, Baldwin and Sedaris are Eva Longoria, Ariana Greenblatt, and Jeff Goldblum. Lisa Kudrow and Jimmy Kimmel return as the voices of Ted’s parents.

Audiences got a glimpse of the new characters when Universal and Dreamworks unveiled the first trailer. While the original Boss Baby characters are all grown up, that doesn’t stop BabyCorp agents from completing missions. This time around, it will be Tina’s de-aging formula. The premise sounds like the little brother version of the original, with filmmakers likely aiming for the 2021 film to go big at the box office. And it’s not a bad idea considering that the wacky antics and light-hearted entertainment in the first film proved to be a hit with kids. Why fix what isn’t broken?

It’s likely that due to the widespread availability of COVID-19 vaccinations in the U.S. Universal was inclined to move up the release date. But simultaneously debuting the film on Peacock is also likely a ploy to boost the new streaming service, particularly ahead of the Olympics at the end of the month. But it will be revealed in July if newly- vaccinated moviegoers will be eager to head to the theater or pay extra on Peacock to watch The Boss Baby: Family Business attempt to follow in its big brother’s footsteps.
