One of the most fun aspects of the hit sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the way that it seems to enjoy spending time with its characters. In particular, it allows viewers to see the many important relationships that emerge among these men and women, many of whom are deeply devoted not only to their jobs, but also to one another. Of particular note is the connection between Jake and Rosa, who seem to have a powerful bond.

That being said, despite their friendship, there were several times in the show where they were not as kind or good to one another as fans might expect.

Rosa Won’t Talk To Jake About Stuff In Her Life

Rosa is notoriously close-lipped about her personal life, and for much of the show, she is unwilling (or unable) to share parts of her life with her coworkers.

While this is part of what makes her character amusing, it also has to be said that it feels disingenuous to not share at least with Jake, with whom she seems to have a deep connection. It’s one of those things that makes a viewer wonder just how much Rosa truly values her relationship with Jake.

Jake Doesn’t Believe Her About The Pontiac Bandit

Even though Jake’s friendship with the Pontiac Bandit (whose real name is Doug Judy) is one of the best things about the show, the truth is that Doug tends to take advantage of Jake’s kind nature and naïveté.

At the very beginning, Rosa tried to warn Jake that he might be getting in over his head where Doug Judy was concerned, but he refused to listen to her, despite the fact that she had already shown that she would always look out of his best interests.

Rosa Doesn’t Respect Jake’s Friendship With The Pontiac Bandit

On the flip side of that dynamic, it quickly becomes clear that there really is something genuine between Jake and Doug Judy. However, Rosa consistently shows that she’s not willing or able to give their friendship any sort of respect or recognition.

While this is somewhat understandable given her ongoing concern for Jake’s well-being, it still doesn’t speak highly of her that she couldn’t put that aside and bring herself to understand just how important Doug Judy had become to Jake (who is always looking for friendship).

Rosa Betrayed Jake During The Second Halloween Heist

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of those series that has a number of running gags, and one of the most enduring and best is the Halloween heist.

Obviously, betraying others is a key part of what makes the heists so funny, and it’s usually essential in order for someone to emerge as the victor. But the fact that Rosa would betray Jake during the course of it shows that, sometimes, the desire to win (on Rosa’s part, anyway) matters more than whatever friendship they have.

Jake Dispatches Rosa To Work Out With Holt

The episode in which the characters all go to a police convention is without a doubt one of the funniest of the series, but it also leads to mayhem when Jake and the rest of his friends get far too inebriated to function the next day.

To make sure that Holt doesn’t suspect anything, Jake dispatches Rosa to work out with him during his morning routine. While Jake had his own problems to deal with, it’s still deeply unfair of him to expect Rosa to take on this duty, especially considering how physically ill she was a result of the celebrations.

Rosa Cheers For Doug Judy To Escape

The dynamic between Jake and Doug Judy continues throughout most of the show, and in addition to Rosa expressing skepticism, she also hopes that the latter will escape.

While this might seem like a good thing on her part, given the fact that such an escape would almost certainly cost Jake his job, this ends up becoming one of those moments where Rosa allowed her own pride and sense of entitlement to take precedence over her friendship and affection for Jake.

Rosa Shows Jake A Fake Photo Of Holt’s Tattoo

The dynamic between Jake and Captain Holt is one of the most endearing in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and it’s clear that they care a lot about one another.

Knowing this, fans would think that Rosa would be a bit more sensitive about getting in the middle of it. But she actually goes so far as to show Jake a fake photo of Holt’s infamous tattoo, despite the fact that doing so not only interferes in their friendship but also because Jake actually paid for a real one. It’s definitely not Rosa’s finest moment, even if Holt did eventually show it to the squad.

Jake Won’t Listen To Rosa That He Might Be Too Obsessed With A Crime Scene

Though he can be a bit of a goofball most of the time, Jake is still very clearly a good detective, and he takes his job very seriously, sometimes too much so. At one point, he gets very obsessed with a crime scene, to the extent that it starts affecting him way more than it should.

What’s more, he also ignores Rosa’s warning that he might be getting too involved, thus showing that, however close they might be, in some ways he is always willing to put his own perspective above others.

Jake Won’t Work With Jack Danger And Imperils Rosa’s Case

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a show that knows how to make the most out of its excellent guest stars and characters, and Jack Danger is one of the best. However, he doesn’t get along with Jake who, in his turn, at first refuses to work with him, even though he knows that doing so will endanger Rosa’s case.

It’s another of those moments where Jake is willing to put his own interests and selfish ego above the interests of his colleagues, even those that he sees as his best friends.

They Don’t Communicate Effectively In The Final Season

Rosa is one of the characters that shows the most growth during the course of the series, and she ultimately comes to believe that she can’t be a part of the police system any longer. However, doing so leads to a large amount of conflict between her and Jake, which is founded upon their fundamental inability (or refusal) to communicate effectively with one another.

It’s a jarring moment, especially since viewers would expect these two people to have much better communication skills with one another given how close they have always been.
