Can Anything Break A Lightsaber Blade

Lightsaber hilts have been broken and kyber crystals destroyed, but is there anything in Star Wars that can break a lightsaber blade itself? Lightsabers are by far one of the most popular weapons in all of entertainment, particularly in Star Wars. As a weapon of the Jedi and Sith, lightsabers are Force-users’ one and only weapon; they refrain from using blasters because of their inefficiency and, as Obi-Wan Kenobi puts it, their lack of civility.

The thing is, lightsabers are also one of the most powerful weapons in the franchise. Practically nothing can destroy a lightsaber and there’s almost nothing that a lightsaber can’t deflect or penetrate. Interestingly, as shown a few times in The Mandalorian season 2, there’s some material that can withstand a lightsaber blade – Mandalorian beskar, for one. Anything made of pure beskar – whether it be a piece of armor or a weapon like the Magistrate’s beskar spear – can block a lightsaber blade. However, that doesn’t mean it can break the beam.

Lightsaber blades or beams are essentially plasma, a form of matter, so the blade can’t be broken at all because it’s not solid enough to break; instead, the beam itself would distort or short out if something were to disrupt it. This has happened in Star Wars Legends before, when a lightsaber hilt was hit with a stun blast; the beam shorted out and the Jedi temporarily couldn’t reactivate it. It’s because of its fundamental nature that certain material, like beskar, can block lightsabers. Essentially, the material reacts with the plasma and prevents the beam from passing through.

The only real way to break a lightsaber blade is to destroy the hilt and/or the kyber crystal within it, which is where the beam’s light and power comes from. That itself is somewhat easy to do, as long as someone strikes the hilt. It’s happened before in Legends and canon, so there is a way for someone to destroy a lightsaber, just not a way to physically break the blade seeing as the form of matter cannot be broken.

Given Star Wars’ mystical qualities, though, eventually someone theoretically might be able to use the Force to change the matter of the lightsaber blade. If they could solidify it enough to be shattered, then it just might work. However, the physics of that would be complex, because cooling plasma enough to turn it into a solid form would force the blade to lose its charge; therefore, the it would no longer be a lightsaber blade. But the Force is the Force, and Star Wars is Star Wars – anything’s possible in a universe with Jedi.
