Captain Marvels Jet Was Stolen From a Notorious Box Office Bomb

While Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful superheroes in the MCU and an expert pilot, not even she could save the 2005 box office disaster Stealth – from which she stole an iconic fighter jet. Carol Danvers has extensive training in both superheroics and as a pilot in the United States Air Force, and she’s certainly qualified to fly experimental aircraft like the one seen in Ms. Marvel #1. Written by Brian Reed & Roberto de la Torre with art by Jimmy Palmiotti and colors by Chris Sotomayor, the issue chronicles Carol’s Ms. Marvel days – along with a nod to a horrific box office bomb.

Carol Danvers has gone through at least four superhero names; she first went by the moniker Ms. Marvel (after being saved by the first Captain Marvel and subsequently acquiring a suite of powers). After Rogue absorbed her abilities, she went by Warbird, then after a brief stint as Binary, adopted Ms. Marvel again before finally becoming Captain Marvel in 2012 – though she was always a pilot. Thus, at the beginning of Ms. Marvel #1 in 2006, Carol somehow manages to borrow a jet from a movie starring Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel and Jamie Foxx.

Carol narrates the opening of the book as she flashes back to her days in the Air Force. “When I was a little girl, I always wanted to fly,” she says as her jet approaches Mach four. “Right out of high school, so I could pay my way through college.” The flashback quickly cuts to the present, showing Carol fly – on her own power – to save an out-of-control vehicle from careening into civilians. Only several panels in the flashback sequence showcase Carol’s jet, which doesn’t look anything like any aircraft used by the United States Air Force – because it’s not. It’s actually an F/A 37 Talon experimental stealth aircraft… designed exclusively for the 2005 movie Stealth.

The resemblance between then-Major Danvers’ aircraft and the full-size prop in the film is truly uncanny. The cockpit is wide and bulbous, what appears to be a very small air intake sits above the pilot’s head, and both aircraft even come equipped with forward-swept wings. But while Captain Marvel remains incredibly popular and her film grossed over one billion dollars worldwide, Stealth was a notorious box office bomb with a budget of $135 million and a total worldwide gross of just $79 million.

Perhaps the world of Stealth and Captain Marvel exist in the same universe. However, it’s more likely that the artist simply took inspiration from the jets featured in a recent film at the time. Captain Marvel’s piloting skills may have saved her in her film, but no amount of superpowers could save Stealth from obscurity.
