DCs Suicide Squad Gives The Perfect ShoutOut to the Teams Creator

Warning: contains spoilers for Suicide Squad #10!

There have been at least two incarnations of the Suicide Squad in the DC Universe, and the creator of the team’s most modern incarnation, John Ostrander, gets the perfect shout-out in Suicide Squad #10, on sale now in print and digital. Without Ostrander’s work, the Suicide Squad fans know and love would not exist, and new Squad recruit Ambush Bug acknowledges this fact.

The first incarnation of the Suicide Squad appeared in 1959’s The Brave and the Bold #25 and would make five more appearances in the series before slipping into obscurity. In 1986, DC released Legends, a six-issue miniseries that saw Darkseid, through his minion Glorious Godfrey, turn public opinion against the heroes of Earth. In response, Amanda Waller reformed the Suicide Squad. This time, the team would consist of villains, working for Waller and the Suicide Squad in hopes of reduced prison sentences. This version of the Squad proved popular with fans, lasting 68 issues. There has been some version of the team in DC Comics ever since, and the team made the jump to live-action in two different films. None of this would have been possible without writer John Ostrander, who not only worked on the Legends miniseries, but wrote every issue of the original run. Now he gets his due diligence in Suicide Squad #10, written by Robbie Thompson, with art by Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira and Dexter Soy, with colors by Marcelo Maiolo and Allen Passalaqua and letters by Wes Abbott.

Waller has sent the Squad into deep space, only to be apprehended by the Green Lanterns. Once imprisoned in the Corps’ Sciencells, the team is tasked to retrieve the Black Hand, who has been a prisoner of the Corps. After being captured, the Black Canary of Earth-3 laments their situation, wondering if there has, “ever been any good Squads.” Ambush Bug (who regularly breaks the fourth wall) says he was a “big fan of Ostrander’s run.” The team has no idea what he is talking about.

While Ambush Bug’s fourth-wall breaking is mostly played for laughs, here he acknowledges John Ostrander’s contributions to the franchise. Before John Ostrander, the Suicide Squad was simply another DC property languishing in limbo, but he and his collaborators took the concept and made it shine. So much of what fans love about the modern version of Suicide Squad sprung from Ostrander: the large, rotating cast of characters, the interplay between Waller and her charges as well as the “shades of grey” morality present in the stories. Under Ostrander’s guidance, several characters, such as Deadshot and the Enchantress, found new life; Amanda Waller has also gone on to become one of DC’s most important characters. This is not the only time Ostrander has been recognized for his contributions to the franchise. A building was named for him in David Ayer’s 2016 film and the writer even had a cameo in James Gunn’s 2021 movie as a doctor in Belle Reve.

Over the past six years, the Suicide Squad has become one of DC’s most popular titles. Fans have been drawn to watching some of the publisher’s vilest villains take a shot at redemption, and it began years ago with writer John Ostrander. Now, Ostrander gets the credit he deserves in Suicide Squad #10.
