Netflix’s spin-off show of the Archie Comics came and went to the disappointment of fans alike. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was a darker take on the familiar half-witch half-mortal character Sabrina Spellman. Kiernan Shipka loved playing the character and will reprise her role on the 6th season of Riverdale. But some fans may not be so appreciative of this second chance.

Netflix canceled the show due to poor ratings and according to Reddit, there may be cause for that. Some watchers of the show didn’t always like the direction that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina took. They all have opinions, and many of them are unpopular.

The Show Isn’t Scary Enough

After Melissa Joan Hart’s beloved portrayal of the title character in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, fans were looking for a change. Netflix marketed Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to veer into the darker occult, just like Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s graphic novel. But some fans remain unimpressed, like Redditor Formal_Refrigerator. “I was so pumped to have a more sinister version of an already great show that I grew up with, but this remake was just… missing something,” the Reddit post states.

Aguirre-Sacasa’s book is a darker tale. One where Harvey dies and Sabrina’s father was an outright villain. “I wish it was more gruesome and actually scary/suspenseful. I just felt it was still too innocent and did not translate well for the target audience it was made for,” Formal_Refrigerator goes on to say. This Redditor views Sabrina as more in line with Riverdale.

Mortal Storylines Doesn’t Deserve The Hate

Sabrina’s main conflict in the series is choosing between her life as a witch and life as a mortal. Because of her half-witch status, Sabrina opts to live half in the magical world and half with her mortal friends. Stories with Harvey, Theo, and Roz are prevalent, which distracts from the supernatural stories.

Reddit user SalemtheBat doesn’t think that this is a bad thing. “Mortal storylines are ok,” the Redditor states. “Not super interesting, but add a bit of social intrigue to the show and don’t deserve all the hate they get.” While Harvey often makes no sense, he is the most normal character on the show and doesn’t have magical powers. Focusing on these stories makes the show more about high school and less about magic.

There’s Not Enough Magic

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina differs greatly from its 90’s counterpart where Sabrina struggled with mastering her magic. Redditor solivia916 points this out. “I want to see daily magic use, Sabrina in school, Sabrina trying and failing at basic magic because she grew up in the mortal world,” the post states.

Sabrina certainly encounters her share of magic in the series, but usually in service to a larger plot. Her aunts and Ambrose are typically guiding her. Her magic is serious and there is less time with her at school for frivolity.

The Musical Numbers Are Cringeworthy

The Archie Comics universe is not a stranger to musical numbers. Since season two of Riverdale, musical episodes have come every season. Though not featuring as many, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina indulges in these moments. “I might get a lot of flack for this but the music moments were the cringiest for me,” says Redditor Miss_Pug. “I had to fast forward those parts.”

Sabrina and her friends don’t have musicals, but they do on occasion burst into song without preamble. Sabrina’s performance of “Tricky” on the Season 3 soundtrack is more than likely what this Reddit user is referring to.

The Dark Lord Should Not Be A Character

Not only was The Dark Lord introduced as a character, but eventually revealed to be Sabrina’s father. Redditor solivia916 thinks this is a mistake. “I think the human introduction of the dark lord so early was a huge mistake and what killed the show,” they said in a post. “It could have thrived for many many seasons on the mysterious nature of the dark lord and what he wants from Sabrina should have been the thesis of the show.”

Lucifer began as a foreboding presence but ended up as a caricature and would not win in a battle for Lord of Hell. He filled the role of overwhelmed father and became less and less dangerous as the series progressed.

Theo Is Boring

Theo is one of Sabrina’s connections to the mortal world and even her humanity at times. Her defense of Theo against high school bullies was a large part of Season 1. But Reddit user Regulator_Joe is not impressed. “Theo is just boring and probably needs to be killed off,” reads one post.

This harsh opinion is unpopular for a reason. Theo’s struggle with self-identity and finding love is a universal theme that everyone can get behind. Everyone except this Reddit user.

Melissa Joan Hart Is Better

Sabrina the Teenage Witch ran for seven seasons from 1996-2003. Redditor elpinky is one of those fans that have a hard time letting go of the original show. “I miss Melissa Joan Hart and talking Salem,” the Reddit user posted. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was largely criticized for the absence of talking Salem. But Melissa Joan Hart’s Sabrina does not fit in with the aesthetic of the new show.

Kiernan Shipka gained attention for her portrayal of a possessed schoolgirl in The Blackcoat’s Daughter. She gives Sabrina a dark edge that the show is going for.

Nick Wasn’t Interesting Until Season 3

Sabrina vacillates between Nick and Harvey for the entire show. The two boys each represent two parts of herself, the mortal and the witch. One Reddit user doesn’t think this dynamic worked for the first part of the show. “Nick was never an interesting character, until season 3. Before he literally had all the intrigue of a piece of sexy cardboard,” says Redditor SalemtheBat.

In the first season, Nick only offered Sabrina a different option to Harvey. It was in Season 3 after he helped contain The Dark Lord that he struggled with his trauma and went dark.

Sabrina Shouldn’t Be The Dark Lord’s Daughter

After Sabrina learned how to harness Hellfire, she went down on a darker path. It was soon revealed that Edward Spellman was not her father, in fact, The Dark Lord was. This is what made her so powerful and technically the Anti-Christ. Some fans dislike this twist. “I don’t like Sabrina being the Morningstar’s daughter,” Redditor recovering_spaz states. “It would have been better to watch her family turn from devout worshipers to having their eyes opened to how fake it all was.”

Sabrina becomes one of the most powerful entities on the show because of her newfound strength. Being The Devil’s daughter brings Sabrina down a dark path, betraying the previously established canon that her father was a witch.

Sabrina Shouldn’t Go To Riverdale

With Chilling Adventures of Sabrina being canceled, Sabrina is packing up her bags and going to Riverdale for at least one episode in Season 6. An anonymous Redditor is disappointed. “I am quite averse to seeing any future Sabrina crossover or potential guest appearance in Riverdale.” Reddit user timetravelercat backs this statement up. “One of the reasons I like Riverdale is because it doesn’t have anything supernatural like most of the teen shows I’ve been into for the past decade.”

This may be solved in the new limited event Riverdale is doing. Entitled Rivervale, the new episodes will be more horror-centric like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and the teenage witch will be one of these additions.
