COD 2021 Reportedly Being Developed By WW2’s Sledgehammer Games

Rumors are suggesting Sledgehammer Games could be returning to develop Call of Duty 2021 after being pulled off Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Sledgehammer Games is reportedly developing the recently announced and yet unnamed Call of Duty 2021. Activision has confirmed a new Call of Duty is coming later this year following the rocky development of 2020’s entry, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. If true, this will come as a second chance for the studio who was abruptly pulled off of that game a little over a year before it was set to release. Treyarch ended up taking the reins and releasing the title, to great sales but less acclaim than 2019’s Modern Warfare.

At the time, it was reported that Sledgehammer was butting heads with series support developer Raven Software. Activision stepped in and pulled the two apart, setting Sledgehammer off on another unknown path and having Raven re-work Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s campaign while Treyarch made the other two modes. Treyarch was developing a fifth Call of Duty: Black Ops game, which is evident based on placeholder art found in Black Ops Cold War. Treyarch was originally slated to make 2021’s title, but it’s unclear what the studio’s Black Ops game would’ve looked like had it been made under traditional circumstances.

Reputable series insider ModernWarzone on Twitter (thanks, Wccftech) reports that Sledgehammer is developing the next entry in Activision’s multi-billion dollar franchise. The leaker doesn’t give much additional info outside of the fact it’s supposedly “100% being developed by Sledgehammer” and “it doesn’t need to be taken with a grain of salt.” Players nonetheless should take it with a grain of salt, though, because this information is not official and things can change at the snap of Activision’s finger, as was proven with the most recent Call of Duty’s development.

It’s probable that more information about Call of Duty 2021 will surface in the spring, as that’s when Activision tends to lift the curtain on the new annual title. If this news is true, it raises the question of what Call of Duty 2021 might look like. Sledgehammer has two successful franchise subseries with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and WWII under its belt, but the studio was reportedly developing a Vietnam-set game for its canned 2020 title. The studio was briefly making a sequel to Advanced Warfare before moving on to WWII. The team could revisit the idea now, especially since it would greatly diversify the series’ settings. If Infinity Ward is likely developing a sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it could be compelling to see a game set in the future as a contrast.

Treyarch’s next game is also a mystery, as it probably won’t be seen until 2023 at the earliest if the development pipeline goes back to normal. Perhaps that team could make more games set in the past, building off off of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Of course, the opposite could happen and Sledgehammer could also focus on building a Pacific Theater-based sequel to WWII while Treyarch goes back to making far-future Black Ops games. Either way, this would allow the rumored Modern Warfare 2 the time it needs to not be rushed out the door in order to ensure there’s a Call of Duty ready for 2021.
