Could Grace and Frankie Be Getting a SpinOff

After eight years and seven seasons, Netflix’s Grace and Frankie has officially become the longest-running original series from the streaming network. One thing that made the show popular, aside from the comedic dynamic between Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, is the number of poignant issues the show explored with just the right amount of humor and grace.

Facing life-altering issues like late-life divorce, sexuality, new relationships, new careers and impending death, Grace and Frankie tackled these topics with over-the-top comedy, but the show wasn’t always about the dynamic duo. It introduced their ex-spouses and followed the romantic liberation of Sol and Robert, who’d been living a difficult lie for decades. Viewers also witnessed the results of their parenting styles through their adult children: Bud, Coyote, Mallory and Brianna. While Grace and Frankie’s story might be over, life goes on for their children, and June Diane Raphael, who played Grace and Robert’s daughter, Brianna Hanson, felt like there was much more story to explore.

Could Grace and Frankie Be Getting a SpinOff

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Raphael spoke about her time on the set of Grace and Frankie and recognizing the potential to further explore her character. Brianna is a modern woman in every way. She’s independent, powerful, self-assured, and she knows exactly what she wants. Her tactics may not always be the kindest, but it’s a dog-eat-dog world, and she’s done everything in her power to make sure she takes the biggest bite.

Brianna’s reputation as a mean girl is definitely not unfounded. Throughout the show, she had absolutely no shame being ruthless as long as she got what she wanted. The stories about how she treated her younger sister Mallory as a kid are legendary and only pale in comparison to the lengths she’s gone to as an adult to continue the trend of picking on Mallory. Her long-term relationship with Say Grace’s accountant, Barry, was where Brianna’s true colors shone. She went into the relationship with her cards on the table, and when what she was willing to give wasn’t enough for Barry, she gave in to compromise in ways that still suited her, even if they only mildly placated Barry.

Briana doesn’t care about marriage, and she has no desire (or patience) for children. Unfortunately, even in modern society, a lot of people still view those two roles as a woman’s responsibility. The constant hounding on when a couple is going to finally make their relationship “official” or when they’re going to start having children are hot button issues for a lot of women, especially for those who put their career and themselves first. Considering this goldmine for future stories, Raphael sat down with show creator Howard Morris and began hashing out ideas for a spinoff pilot during the pandemic. In her interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Raphael mentioned that despite choices Brianna made with conviction, she still faces the possibility of growing old and going through her life alone, which poses a lot of questions upon reflection.

After the pair finished the pilot, they pitched it to Netflix. Netflix asked for a script, but has yet to greenlight the project. Given the success of Grace and Frankie, and the impact the entire cast of characters had on viewers, a spinoff would be welcomed with open arms. On the other hand, spinoffs can be risky, often falling short in creating the same dynamic that provoked a connection in the original. Given Raphael’s history as a screenwriter and her connection to the characters, especially Brianna, there is definitely potential for another hit if Netflix gives the go-ahead.

All seven seasons of Grace and Frankie are available to stream on Netflix.
