Criminal Minds 5 Perfect Fan Theories About The Final Season (& 5 Hilariously Bad Ones)

The CBS psychological crime drama, Criminal Minds, completed its epic run earlier this year with its 15th season. The season ended on a relatively happy note with an overall satisfactory finale.

Like every other series, Criminal Minds had a barrage of fan theories popping up throughout its run, some perfectly sane, some ridiculous, and some positively funny. Here’s a look at some of the best, and some hilariously bad theories that fans threw up about the final season.

10 Perfect: Morgan & Garcia Reunite

Derek Morgan and Penelope Garcia’s bond was one of the most heartwarming relationships on the show for as long as the gorgeous Shemar Moore’s character was around.

Moore had made a comeback on the show even though he had officially left, so fans, justifiably, theorized that Derek Morgan would make an appearance in the final season for a last hoorah and hug his ‘baby girl’ one last time. As far as theories go, this was a perfectly valid one.

9 Bad: The Series Took Place In A Parallel Universe

Criminal Minds 5 Perfect Fan Theories About The Final Season (& 5 Hilariously Bad Ones)

One comes across a number of wild fan theories for shows that have been around for as long as Criminal Minds had been.

One such theory stated that the series actually took place in a parallel universe where hunting serial killers and unsubs was not evolved and the science of tracking their killing patterns wasn’t developed enough. In this parallel universe, it took a specialized bunch of experts to figure out patterns since the police were completely incompetent at dealing with even the most basic cases of serial killing.

8 Perfect: JJ & Reid Would Get Together

In the penultimate season, the writers suddenly threw a curveball at the audience when they showed JJ confessing her love for Reid.

Although the shy and fragile Reid had been shown to harbor feelings for JJ since way earlier, there had never been any indication that JJ might have had any romantic feelings towards him. However, when JJ’s confession came, fans theorized that she and Reid would get together in the final season. JJ would leave her husband, Will, although what would happen to her kids was anybody’s guess.

7 Bad: Everything Happened In Reid’s Head

Spencer Reid was an introverted genius with multiple doctorates and an eidetic memory whose expertise was invaluable to the FBI’s Behavioural Analysis Unit.

Early on into the series, it was revealed that Reid’s mom was in a mental institution, suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. And throughout the series, Reid himself had, at various points, expressed his concern at being diagnosed with the disease, which is inherited genetically. In fact, there were hints that he might actually suffer from borderline schizophrenia. Based on this, fans theorized that the whole drama had in fact taken place inside Reid’s head who was schizophrenic after all. Despite the underlying pathos of this, there is something darkly humorous about the theory.

6 Perfect: Nathan Harris Would Make A Comeback

In season 2, Reid had saved a young man named Nathan Harris who displayed psychopathic tendencies; he felt the urge to kill and found himself aroused by the sight of corpses. Harris was institutionalized before he could actually hurt someone.

One fan theorizes that Harris would return in the final season, either as a serial killer or as one of the few unsubs that the BAU had profiled wrong. Harris might even develop a connection with Reid who had earlier expressed dismay that saving his life might lead him to actually start killing people. For those who don’t know, however, actor Anton Yelchin, who played Harris, passed away tragically a few years ago; he was only 27.

5 Bad: JJ Was A Psychopath

Although the show does take some creative license departing significantly from the real BAU unit at times, at least the reason why it focuses heavily on psychopaths and serial killings is clear. As any avid viewer of this hugely popular police procedural/crime drama knows, the BAU is a specialized unit of the FBI dealing especially with violent crimes and serial killings. Ergo, the brunt of the cases deals with such crimes.

However, a hysterically funny theory suggests that the final season would reveal Jennifer Jareau, fondly known as JJ, to be a psychopath, which is why she enjoyed picking such gruesome cases for the team to solve. Now, this is of course, ridiculous since JJ does not really pick the cases at all, but acts as a kind of liaison who intimates the unit on a new case. But to each his own!

4 Perfect: Reid Is Bisexual

Another popular theory on Reddit is that Reid is actually bisexual. Apparently, when the character was conceived, he was meant to be a bisexual. The show’s creator himself tweeted that he would have loved for Reid to be bisexual but his feelings for JJ made it difficult to continue that storyline.

Fans, however, theorized that Reid was bisexual all along and that would be revealed in the final seasons. While this was a perfectly plausible idea, the showrunners did not opt to go down this lane.

3 Bad: Reid Becomes An Unsub

A very popular theory that did the round for many years was that Reid would eventually become a serial killer and hunting him down would be the team’s final swan song.

This is not just bad but also a little offensive, to be honest. Not everybody who is socially awkward and has an unstable home life ends up being a serial killer. It’s true that Reid suffered tremendous mental, physical and emotional trauma–what with his mom being in a medical facility, and he himself being tortured and held hostage by a serial killer, to say nothing of his ex-girlfriend dying in front of him–yet, it would have been hard to imagine him going rogue. Having said that, had the writers decided to take that arc with Reid, he would definitely have led the team into quite a dance.

2 Perfect: Reid Would Sacrifice Himself

Matthew Gray Gubler’s Spence was one of the few remaining original cast members on the show when the series aired its final season. It thus goes without saying that Gubler amassed quite the fan following over the years, and most fan theories revolved around him.

Since Reid was the one person with by far the most trauma in his past, JJ-Reid shippers theorized that he would sacrifice his own life to save JJ, thus keeping true to the tragedy of Reid’s life. Reid’s final gesture would both seal his love for JJ and make him the ultimate tragic hero.

1 Bad: The BAU Is A Team Of Psychics

A hilariously bad theory suggests that the BAU actually represents a bunch of psychics who use the science of profiling to cover up their art of psychic deduction. As it happens, that is so not what the series is all about.

There have been other popular procedurals such as The Mentalist, where the protagonist Patrick Jane led a dubious life as a psychic before he joined the CBI. However, there have never been any indications that the team in Criminal Minds relies on anything except science and possibly some exceptionally good instincts.
