Cyberpunk 2077s Lifepath Convergence Happens Way Sooner Than You Think

As it turns out, the life path decision players make at the beginning of Cyberpunk 2077 is not nearly as notable as was previously believed. In a bit of a surprise, the inevitable point in the story where the life paths converge into one main storyline happens significantly earlier than most players anticipated.

When players start the game, they’re given the choice of one of three life paths in Cyberpunk 2077 that make up V’s background. V can be a Nomad living in the badlands, a Street Kid who grew up in Night City, or a Corpo, having been wrapped up in the conflict between corporations within Night City. The thought coming into the game is that players would actually get to experience these life paths in the form of a prologue or beginning act to the story, and that couldn’t be further from the case.

As it turns out, the different life paths are a thing in Cyberpunk 2077 for about thirty minutes before players go through a time skip where they see a montage of V and Jackie becoming friends – one that isn’t even unique to their particular life path – before being dropped right into the game’s main story. Life paths are still relevant throughout the game, as V has access to unique dialogue options based on the choice players make, but that’s it. CD Projekt Red seemed to push life paths like they would be a significant factor in the player’s experience, and that’s just not the case. The life path choice borders on being irrelevant, much like a pretty long list of mechanics found in this game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is Overwhelming

Cyberpunk 2077 is just way too much at one time. Instead of gradually introducing the game’s obscene amount of mechanics, it’s all dropped right on top of the player almost as soon as the game begins. It’s impossible to not feel overwhelmed by the size of the game’s world and the amount of clutter in the menus. Life paths were a perfect way to slowly integrate players to this world in order to control the flood of information and CD Projekt Red inexplicably chose to just do it all as fast as possible, which ruins Cyberpunk 2077’s pacing.

CD Projekt Red’s handling of the life paths in Cyberpunk 2077 is pretty disappointing. After so much build up to the release of this game, players being given the ability to fully customize their version of V and experience a detailed backstory for that character was a really cool thing to look forward to. Instead, it’s just sort of an arbitrary choice that allows V to exposit details about different aspects of Night City to the player. And the result is players being dropped right into the heart of Cyberpunk 2077 and all of its mechanics at once, creating a chaotic and overwhelming beginning to the game.
