DCs Best Robin Tim Drake Needs a Better Comic Story

What is the deal with DC Comics’ Batman mythology and the lack of dynamics for Tim Drake? Tim Drake is the third Robin to the Dark Knight, though he’s seemingly the least interesting Robin when compared to the other young heroes who have taken on the mantle.

Every other Robin has some sort of dynamic and ongoing struggle that they’re consistently in conflict with in the background, regardless of whatever’s immediately happening in the comics. However, when it comes to Drake, it seems as though the biggest thing he’s in turmoil over is his costume and codename, which seems like a mistake and missed opportunity on DC Comics’ part.

For comparison’s sake, Dick Grayson was the first of Batman’s Robins, who eventually took on a new name and city to protect as his own man, becoming Nightwing. Over time, Nightwing would constantly deal with a supposed prophecy from the evil Court of Owls that claimed that he would be their greatest warrior and assassin. He often seen resisting their Talons and desires for him to join their ranks. Not only that, but Nightwing has also been dealing with major trauma and memory loss, due to being shot in the head while on the job.

Jason Todd was the second Robin and was killed by Joker, unable to be saved by Batman. However, he was resurrected by Ras Al Ghul and his rejuvenating Lazarus Pit, although he wouldn’t ever be the same. Jason adopted the Red Hood persona, choosing lethal justice as a stronger method than that of his former mentor. As a result, Jason often clashes with the Caped Crusader and has a lot of inner conflict about his choices and motivations. Damian Wayne, the son of Batman, was the fourth and most current Robin, although he recently quit and and left the Robin title behind, largely due to the fact that he was raised by assassins for the majority of his life and has recently decided to kill criminals as well, while also having significant issues with his father that seem currently be irreparable.

This leaves Tim Drake, the third Robin. While he was the only Robin to actually determine Batman’s true identity and thusly “applied” for the role of Robin thanks to his smarts and intellect, there’s not really much else that sets Tim apart from the other sidekicks beyond the usual duties of a Robin and/or former Robin. The only difference is how many times he’s changed his costume and codenames, a clear indicator that DC Comics doesn’t look as though it knows what it’s doing with Drake for the long run. Not only that, but they even took him off the board completely for a whole year at the beginning of their Rebirth relaunch, having him be “killed,” but in reality secretly imprisoned. At least at that time there was a narrative reason for them to not have to worry about dealing with him for a little while.

Tim Drake has been Robin, Red Robin, and then just Drake in the span of just a few years with just as many costume changes, if not more. However, he has just gone back to the title of Robin, seemingly at Batman’s request. But that means that this isn’t really a move motivated by Tim at all. It seems to be a reactionary move that’s the result of Damian recently quitting as Robin, giving DC Comics the opportunity to give Tim the Robin name and look once more, getting rid of the Drake name and costume, which was received quite poorly by fans. Why? Because there never seems to be a personal reason for the name and costume changes on Tim’s part. It all feels arbitrary and forced to distinguish Tim from the other Robins, but failing to commit and give him a defining status quo change and/or ongoing struggle that would make an alteration to his character and subsequent persona feel more earned.

What Tim Drake needs and deserves is his own unique challenge and story. Tim Drake is arguably the best Robin Batman has, as he’s the least rebellious, the smartest, and hasn’t yet moved on to become something other than a Robin in any real sense. However, perhaps that’s exactly what needs to happen, and DC Comics needs to provide Tim with a reason to leave the Robin mantle behind as his peers have. He could become something bigger and better. He shouldn’t just be a placeholder Robin while Damian has a teenage crisis before inevitably coming back to become Batman’s Robin once more.
