Death Note How Teru Mikami Became the New Kira

During the second story arc of Death Note, Light Yagami was slowly but surely being surrounded by enemies, and he needed a way out. Light was giving himself away as Kira bit by bit, and even his police assistants, such as Aizawa and Ide, were watching him closely. Since he was unwilling to simply quit being Kira, and Misa was no longer an option, Light decided to appoint a new Kira from among his many faithful followers. He ended up choosing Teru Mikami, a formidable agent for Kira’s cause.

Stubborn Justice

Death Note How Teru Mikami Became the New Kira

Teru Mikami was born with Light’s ideals of justice and salvation, minus the notebook itself. As a boy, he enjoyed being a leader figure in school, and defended his bullied classmates. When he started middle school, the bullying became more serious, and Mikami began to suffer beatings during his stubborn acts of upholding justice. This led his mother to object, and she urged Teru to simply mind his own business and make sure he got good grades.

Teru was privately outraged, lamenting his mother’s apparent lack of justice and sympathy for his cause. Then, in high school, a group of delinquents at Teru’s school went on a drunken joyride and killed his mother in an accident, and this galvanized Teru’s will. Now he must enforce justice by any means necessary because no one else would. Thus, he became Light Yagami’s equal, and a few years earlier at that.

In college, Teru studied law and became a prosecuting attorney, using the power of the law to bring justice to anyone who harmed others. He was good at it, but it still felt like something was missing. Then he started seeing countless news reports about the so-called Kira killing criminals through unknown means. Teru was delighted and watched with glee as Kira’s world slowly but surely became a reality. With L gone, Light became the new L and operated as Kira at the same time, winning over most of the world to his cause. Then Teru realized that Kira was slowing down, and he decided to do something. This would change his life.

Bringing Back The God

By 2009, Kira had become a dominant force in the world, but for some reason, Kira stopped speaking publicly and seemed to be going dormant. Demegawa, Kira’s primary spokesman, started getting carried away and became a spotlight-seeking star on TV. Teru found this problematic, and he wanted his god to return. So, at a televised Kira rally, Teru joined in the crowd and made sure that he got a minute of the spotlight to himself. With a microphone in hand, he effectively said “Kira, as our lord, we need you to speak to us and give us guidance. Let us hear your voice.”

Impressed and intrigued, Light looked into this fellow and learned all about who Teru Mikami was. Realizing that Teru was practically his twin in intellect and the desire for justice, Light covertly mailed Teru one of the Death Notes, complete with strict instructions. If Teru became a liability, Kira would murder him, but Teru was confident that it would never come to that. At once, Teru made the eye trade with Ryuk to make sure no one could escape his grasp, and then he began a systematic method of killing criminals on Kira’s behalf.

He would fill out exactly one page’s worth of criminals per day, densely packing the written names, and he made sure to kill Demegawa, too, along with Demegawa’s own followers. The troublesome and unhinged Demegawa was gone, bringing stability back to Kira’s kingdom, and Light was pleased that Teru correctly recognized Demegawa as a problem and took care of that matter. From that point on, Teru Mikami was the right hand of Kira, and even if the police and Near were closely watching Light and Misa, Teru was free to massacre criminals as he pleased.
