Masters of the Universes Most Brutal Transformation Radically Changes HeMan Lore

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 2, now streaming on Netflix.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 1 certainly proved to be daring, as it killed off He-Man and had Teela trying to resurrect him and bring magic back to Eternia. It also made Evil Lyn a sympathetic figure, as Skeletor stole the Power of Grayskull to become a god, aka the most sadistic version of the character ever. Now, come Part 2, further subversion occurs as the show’s most brutal transformation changes the He-Man lore big time.

It’s the revelation that Prince Adam can transform into Savage He-Man, and more so, he doesn’t need the Sword of Power to do so. It occurs early on as Skeletor tries to squash the heroes in his godmode, only for Adam to laugh at how the villain needs the sword. He jokes how Skeletor underestimates him, making it clear the sword isn’t necessary for He-Man to come to life.

As Adam smirks, musing over what would happen if he called upon the Power of Grayskull without the Power Sword, he’s transformed into Savage He-Man — a hulking caveman driven purely by instinct and rage. Skeletor refers to this form as “power incarnate” because this version of He-Man can endure the most fearsome attacks by Skele-God.

With the full Power of Grayskull unleashed, Adam cuts a Tarzan-like figure, imbued with the power of Hulk and berserker attitude of Wolverine. Using his primal rage, raw fury, unwavering strength and the unbridled speed of 10 He-Men, he batters Skeletor to the point the tyrant begs for mercy and later is jealous.

However, after teleporting them away to recover, Teela cautions this one-man army is “what happens when the power isn’t tempered by the sword. It’s all rage; no reason.” The show doesn’t hide how this warrior’s love for destruction, disorder and mindless chaos can harm the heroes.

Like clockwork, without intellect to control his new form, this barbaric He-Man almost damages Teela in the Mystic Mountains when she tries to calm him. He’s truly a transformed beast, going on to tear through Eternia’s forces at Point Dread, rampaging in an uncontrolled frenzy to almost kill King Randor.

Luckily, Adam at his core has goodness, and when he hears Randor apologizing for being a bad dad, this compassion, humility and empathy manages to rival the Power of Grayskull itself. It calms the savage down, allowing him to relinquish the power and become himself again. Adam is so scared and alarmed at the monster he became, he refuses to call down the power on his own again, which is so interesting as it means a weapon of war is what helps make him a peaceful, mindful savior.

Admittedly, this bombshell would have been a nice surprise had Mattel not spoiled this He-Man’s debut with a new action figure detailing the twist. After all, the roots of Savage He-Man stretch back to the early ’80s and a super-rare toy, which was rumored to be part of Mattel’s pitch to get the Conan movie licensing rights. Thus, Savage He-Man had no real backstory in the comics, cartoons or figurine line, so this revelation would have caught fans off-guard. Nonetheless, it’s still an enjoyable addition to the lore, as it highlights Adam’s humanity and how he knows with great power, comes great responsibility.
