Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Degrassi: The Next Generation presents audiences with a large cast of characters. There is a new class every season, and each young person has the endless potential of any high school student. However, some of their futures are brighter than others. A lot can change for the students after their first episode on Degrassi: TNG.

Some characters like Holly J Sinclair are overachievers, cultivating their intellect throughout their high school years. Other characters like Jay Hogart aren’t interested in getting any smarter. The smartest students reach their full potential by the time they leave Degrassi’s halls, with years of success ahead of them.

Drew Torres

Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Drew is Degrassi: TNG’s most lovable jock. His debut begins with simple plotlines like trying out for the Degrassi football team. However, by the time of his last appearance, Drew experiences a whirlwind of drama and danger. Most of the challenges Drew faces come from his decision-making. Drew is one of the least intelligent main characters on Degrassi: TNG.

Not only is he a weak student in school, but also his actions outside the classroom don’t reflect those of a smart person. Drew finds himself in legal trouble wrapped up in gang activity, juggles two relationships with Katie and Bianca in a web of deceit, and drops out of school. Many of Drew’s actions are meant with good intentions, like when he fights Bianca’s ex Anson to protect her. However, his decisions reveal he is one of the main cast’s least intelligent characters.

Gavin “Spinner” Mason

Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Spinner is presented as one of Degrassi: TNG’s most foolish characters from his first appearances on the show. He is introduced as a dimwitted bully, seen shoving a student’s head in a water fountain in the opening credits of the first season. Spinner becomes warmer as the show continues, but he doesn’t seem to get much brighter. Spinner repeats his senior year at Degrassi, and he fears not being able to graduate at all. Spinner’s lack of wits goes beyond his academic weaknesses.

Spinner maintains his friendship with Jay Hogart even after Jimmy is shot. He is too dense to realize Jay caused him to lose all his friends when Jay blames Rick’s humiliation on Jimmy in one of Degrassi: TNG’s top-rated episodes. Furthermore, Spinner is insensitive to Marco when he comes out as gay, and is inconsiderate to Paige when she is forced to work at the mall movie theater. These actions don’t lead fans to see him as the smartest student from his group of friends.

Craig Manning

Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Craig has many talents. He is charming, charismatic, and a talented musician. Many of the Degrassi ladies develop a fondness for Craig throughout the series, but they aren’t drawn to Craig because of his intelligence. Most of Craig’s plotlines surround his romantic relationships with students like Ashley Kerwin, Ellie Nash, and Manny Santos.

These relationships put Craig’s lack of wits on display. He juggles an affair with Manny while dating Ashley, and is too negligent to keep the relationship secret. He allows Ashley to find his gifts to Manny when she helps her get ready for their performance on stage. Craig appears to float through life with his head in the clouds, and thanks to his musical talent, seems to come out on top regardless.

Emma Nelson

Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Emma is introduced in Degrassi: TNG as a bookworm. She is focused on academics and fights for causes like taking a stand against GMO food. However, Emma’s ambition often clouds her critical thinking, and some of her decisions seem like those of a dimwit.

Emma falls for Peter Stone’s deceit when they date after he plants drugs in Sean Cameron’s locker. She fails to remember the way Peter blackmails her best friend Manny Santos with a nude video. Furthermore, she has a fling with Jay, ignoring the inevitable consequences which would come when she gets back together with her long-standing partner Sean. Many fans see Emma’s most foolish decision as marrying one-time fling Spinner at the end of her plotline. Some audiences think the relationship hurt Degrassi: The Next Generation as a whole.

Alli Bhandari

Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Alli is certainly book smart. She does well in school and is introduced to audiences in Degrassi’s Gifted Program. Her academic pursuits continue throughout the series, participating in school activities like the Science Olympics. However, Alli proves she isn’t as smart as she might seem during school hours.

Alli fails to see the patterns in her decision-making. She consistently gets in trouble with her conservative parents and has her feelings played with by partners like Drew, Johnny DiMarco, and Leo. It takes her until her final appearances on the show to realize what she needs to do to meet her goals.

Jay Hogart

Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Jay is one of Degrassi: TNG’s most notable villains. He causes trouble for the rest of the main characters consistently on the show. He makes Rick Murray snap when he leads him to believe Jimmy pranks him, gives Manny a bogus demo reel when she auditions for her big Hollywood break and takes advantage of Emma when she is grieving from the school shooting.

Jay may be a troublemaker, but he is also smart. Without his intelligence, he wouldn’t be able to manipulate the students of Degrassi so easily. He convinces JT Yorke to steal drugs and sell them when he needs money and convinces Sean to leave the scene of the crime after a hit-and-run. Jay always knows exactly what to say to make his fellow students do what he wants.

Liberty Van Zandt

Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Fans know Liberty is one of the smartest students to ever enter the halls of Degrassi. She is portrayed as a bookish overachiever from her first appearance in the series. She is focused on academics and rarely appears in dramatic plotlines because she is smart enough to avoid complications in her life.

Liberty faces challenges, but they are rarely due to her lack of thoughtfulness. She struggles with an unplanned pregnancy, but only after JT fails to use proper protection. Perhaps her most foolish action is vying for Damian Hayes’ affection when he is dating her good friend Emma. Liberty’s intelligence is exemplified in her position as valedictorian of her class when she graduates.

Clare Edwards

Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Clare is one of Degrassi: TNG’s most notable academics. She is focused on school and joins other extracurricular activities like the school newspaper. She is even in the running for valedictorian of her class, although Conner Deslauriers edges her out for the win. By the time she leaves Degrassi, she is accepted into one of the U.S.’s most prestigious schools, Columbia University.

Degrassi: TNG’s most famous Capricorn shows her intelligence outside the halls of Degrassi as well. Clare addresses her problems critically, whether it be harassment from her boss or her unplanned pregnancy. Clare even decides to take a year off from school after she graduates. She can see the move will make her happier without letting her drive for academic success cloud her judgment.

Savtaj “Sav” Bhandari

Degrassi TNG Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Sav’s intelligence is put on display most clearly during his time in school. He strives for academic achievement and even becomes School Council president. His drive only increases when he gets together with. the equally motivated Holly J toward the end of his run on the show.

Sav runs into his fair share of trouble on the series. He has an unplanned pregnancy scare with Anya MacPherson and gets into several spats with his conservative parents. However, Sav learns from his mistakes. He shows his emotional intelligence when he and Holly J break up. He’s hurt but understands their parting is for the best.

Jimmy Brooks

Jimmy Brooks is perhaps the most intelligent character to appear on Degrassi: TNG. He graduates from school a year late, but only because he is recovering from the school shooting that leaves him in a wheelchair. However, his smarts are put on display outside of the classroom as well.

Jimmy’s intellect rises above his classmates because of the variety in which it spans. Jimmy proves to be gifted in the visual arts when he paints a mural with Ellie, musically during his time with him and Craig’s band Downtown Sasquatch, and in science projects like building a model bridge. His emotional intelligence is hard to deny when he forgives Spinner for his part in the school shooting, even finishing his lab project for him so he can graduate.
