Destiny 2s December Balance Patch Will Be Games Biggest Ever

A major Destiny 2 balance patch in December will completely overhaul Guardian abilities, and it’s poised to be one of the game’s most significant updates to date. Developer Bungie has been generally quiet about future content in the free-to-play title, as there’s just under a month left before Destiny 2’s Bungie 30th Anniversary DLC. While regular activities are still cycling in and out, the MMO-lite shooter has not had a significant update to its PvE content in weeks. Instead, November has been generally focused on the game’s PvP mode, The Crucible.

With the Halloween event now past and annual holiday celebration The Dawning still a few weeks away, Destiny 2 has been shining a spotlight on its streaming community in the meantime. There are still plenty of Bounties abound for players to work towards completing, and streamers themselves have become part of one particular flavor of challenge. November saw the return of Destiny 2’s Bungie Bounties, where streamers become targets for the community to match with or against in the hopes of obtaining unique in-game rewards.

In the latest This Week at Bungie blog post, the developer revealed Destiny 2’s upcoming Bungie 30th Anniversary DLC will accompany a complete rebalance of Guardian abilities. The studio says it will separate Destiny 2’s PvE and PvP mode ability sandboxes, allowing the studio to retool and refine the game’s multitude of abilities separately in each half of the multiplayer game. The Hunter’s Flux Grenade was highlighted as an example of just how significant some of these changes will be. The grenade will be given the ability to one-hit kill when sticking an enemy, similar to Destiny 2 Hunters’ throwing knives, but the base cooldown time to use this ability will now be over three minutes long.

The retooling of these abilities is another step further into MMO territory for Destiny 2. The December balancing update will also move older subclasses into an “Abilities 3.0” system first introduced with Stasis in the Beyond Light DLC expansion. Bungie’s overview on the change states, “These kinds of varied cooldowns and power outputs should make the game feel more dynamic and give more depth to buildcrafting.” Additionally included in the Destiny 2 update is a super ability recharge time rework to encourage active player participation in fights rather than sitting back and charging supers passively.

The Destiny 2 rebalance patch will be released at the same time as the upcoming Bungie 30th Anniversary DLC, which will feature a new 6-player activity, dungeon, and the return of a classic Destiny weapon, the Gjallarhorn rocket launcher. While some players are questioning the value of Destiny 2 DLC, the rebalance patch will free for all, but it remains to be seen how well-received it is after rolling out.
