Dexter What Drives New Bloods Serial Killer Why [SPOILER] Kills

Warning: Contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood episode 5.

In Dexter: New Blood episode 5, “Runaway,” the show confirmed that Kurt Caldwell is the serial killer behind the disappearance of the runaways but has only hinted at why. Dexter: New Blood has big shoes to fill after the original show’s 8 season run. However, it also has a mess to clean up after Dexter season 8 concluded with a controversial finale that leaves all of Dexter: New Blood under the microscope. This includes adequately explaining the motivation behind New Blood’s serial killer as the drama unfolds.

Picking up almost ten years after his last kill in Dexter season 8, Dexter: New Blood sees the titular serial killer living in Iron Lake in upstate New York under the name Jim Lindsay. Following the model of the original show, Dexter: New Blood follows Dexter as he deals with concealing his Dark Passenger from his day-to-day life while another serial killer works in the background as a larger mystery. The return of Dexter has been a little different in that Dexter seems almost only passingly aware that another killer is operating in his town as he tries to keep out of the situation.

In Dexter: New Blood episode 4, Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) runs into a familiar face at a conference in the form of Angel Batista (David Zayas) who is now the chief of Miami Metro PD. He highlights to Angela that the biggest key to solving the mystery of the seemingly unconnected disappearances of teen girls is to find the element that they all have in common. This leaves a huge question to answer: why does Dexter: New Blood’s serial killer murder runaways? Solving this mystery is essential in understanding Dexter: New Blood’s serial killer’s motivation and figuring out exactly why he kills.

The Serial Killer Is Kurt Caldwell

The existence of Dexter: New Blood’s serial killer in Iron Lake is established early on when Lily is shown locked inside a cabin room and eventually sees a camera with the words “you’re already dead” written under it. The killings have clearly been going on for a long time as Angela has a full wall of missing persons posters dedicated to missing young women and repeatedly references the disappearance of her friend, Iris, when they were in high school together. In Dexter: New Blood episode 3, shots of some elements of the serial killer’s appearance are shown as he prepares to murder Lily and he plays Del Shannon’s “Runaway” on vinyl.

At the end of Dexter: New Blood episode 4, “‘H’ Is For Hero,” it is heavily implied that Kurt Caldwell is the runaway serial killer. Chloe (Skylar Wright) is collected by him from his diner a and he takes her to the cabin seen in episode 3. In episode 5 his role as the killer is confirmed when he is shown killing Chloe. While Kurt Caldwell is revealed as the serial killer, there are still several questions about his killing in Dexter: New Blood: does he work alone? Why does he target runaways? And was he really responsible for Iris’ disappearance?

Everything Dexter: New Blood Revealed About Kurt Caldwell

Dexter What Drives New Bloods Serial Killer Why [SPOILER] Kills

Of the citizens of Iron Lake, Kurt Caldwell is one of the most explored characters and now that he has been revealed to be the killer there is even more that can be explained. The father of Matt Caldwell, Kurt clearly doesn’t have too much problem seeing himself and his kin as above the law and feels that money can fix most problems. His conversation with Harrison in Dexter: New Blood episode 5 makes it clear that he feels that Matt was a mess and wishes that he could try again to do things differently.

As a serial killer, he appears to work on a two-month cycle. After he has captured Chloe, he goes to the bar and plays the song Del Shannon’s “Runaway” on the jukebox (the same song he listens to during Lily’s murder) while clearly in a celebratory mood. Tess, the bartender (Gizel Jimenez), says that he does this every two months or so, that is presumably how often he would normally kill, although Chloe seems to have come particularly quick on the heels of his murder of Lily, which implies he might be seeking to blow off steam in some manner after Matt’s death.

The murders appear to be ritualistic and methodical. Kurt Caldwell gets angry when Chloe won’t play his game and act the way he expects, saying that she has ruined everything when she doesn’t run away and he shoots her in the face instead. This implies that in Dexter: New Blood Kurt is reenacting some sort of past trauma as a way to handle his own Dark Passenger. He also drains and saves the blood. This could be an extension of his motive, but it could also be related to how he disposes of the bodies to avoid mess in a similar manner to the Ice Truck Killer from Dexter season 1.

Why Kurt Caldwell Goes After Runaways – Every Theory

Dexter What Drives New Bloods Serial Killer Why [SPOILER] Kills

At first glance, it might be thought that Kurt Caldwell kills runaways simply because they will not be missed. However, clues littered throughout Dexter: New Blood suggest that there is something deeper at play here. While it might play a factor in his choices, he is also targeting specifically young women which implies that there is more to his motivations than simply conducting kills of convenience. The most likely theory for why Kurt Caldwell targets runaways is that he is looking for a particular type of person to fulfill a role in his reenactment so that he can perform it on a regular basis. Based on the use of the song Runaway and other songs in Dexter: New Blood associated with the killings, it is likely that his ritual relates to a lost lover, potentially Matt’s mother, who left him and might have been his first kill. Notably, Matt’s mother has not been discussed beyond an acknowledgment that she is dead.

Alternatively, it is possible that the person who ran away from Kurt was an as-yet undisclosed daughter. Kurt gets angry when Chloe begins to undress for him on camera in Dexter: New Blood episode 5, saying it is wrong. His anger implies that he didn’t have a sexual relationship with the person that he is having the girls reenact. If he had in some way been responsible for the death of a daughter, it might explain why he is so inclined to let Matt off the hook on a regular basis. Alternatively, it is possible that Iris was Kurt Caldwell’s first kill and that he had a more direct connection to her. This would make sense narratively as it would explain Angela’s connection to her and why she is raised so often in passing. If Kurt was having an affair with an underage woman and she tried to leave, he could have killed her out of fear of his secrets being exposed. His continued kills leading up to Dexter: New Blood might be a repeated method of dealing with that first kill.

There is also another possibility that could tie into the above theories as well as the larger critiques of capitalism in Dexter: New Blood. Before Kurt Caldwell kills Chloe, he offers to give her a job at his diner and let her work for the money that she wants. He offers a similar chance to Harrison when he plans to leave town at the end of Dexter: New Blood episode 5. Presumably, if anyone accepts his offer then he does not kill them as it would leave too clear of a trail back to him if many of his employees were disappearing. However, this leaves a suggestion that he might be idolizing a “bootstraps” mentality in Dexter: New Blood and uses this as a test of whether they are willing to be what he judges to be a “worthy” member of society, and if they choose to leave instead then he kills them.
