Disco Elysium Players Are Trying to Earn a Mysterious Achievement

The last quarter of 2019 offered up some excellent games for players to dive into. With so many excellent games getting released at once, it’s only natural that some players may have missed some of the best experiences winter 2019 had to offer, including Disco Elysium.

Of all those excellent games released in the last quarter of 2019, Disco Elysium could be considered the underdog. While the game released quietly in October 2019, it has received critical acclaim across the industry. Though the game has been out for five months now, players are still trying to earn one mysterious achievement called “Palerunner.”

For those unaware, Disco Elysium is an indie game from development studio ZA/UM who originally thought up the game’s world in a D&D group campaign. Players and industry figures alike have praised the game’s incredible world-building, dialogue, and aesthetic. However, while much of Disco Elysium’s content has been uncovered players have been hard at work trying to decipher an achievement that was added to the game in late January.

The achievement was added to the game as part of the game’s hardcore mode update, but the achievement’s details are hidden until it is earned. Eventually, the achievement was deciphered requiring players to “phase-shift for 60 seconds.” Even more confusing is that there is no natural in-game occurrences of phase shifting in all of Disco Elysium’s world. At least none that the vast majority of players have recorded.

Naturally, the Disco Elysium community went into a frenzy researching possible ways or scenarios that would cause phase-shifting. Some players thought that phase-shifting may be related to the Pale, which is a phenomenon in Disco Elysium’s world uncovered over the course of the game’s story. Unfortunately, there is no way for the player to actually interact with the Pale during the story. Finally, one player made progress toward earning the achievement.

A player going by the username Sam Dreamurr claimed that they earned the achievement after encountering a strange glitch that involved saving during a loading screen. After doing this, the player would load the game into a black void of sorts that they were unable to move in. Upon restarting the game a door would appear and by going through it the player would be back in the game’s world and the achievement would unlock.

While players have been unable to replicate earning the achievement without this glitch from Sam Dreamurr’s save file, the community is still hard at work. Disco Elysium seems to have a strong community for a somewhat niche game, despite the game’s widespread recognition during this past awards season. Many players probably found Disco Elysium after it’s incredible showing at the 2019 Game Awards.

Disco Elysium is out now for PC, and will be released for Xbox One and PS4 in 2020.
