Disney Was Always Supportive of Eternals Sex Scene Says Director

Disney was always completely supportive of the sex scene in Eternals, says director Chloé Zhao. Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the movie follows an immortal race of alien beings known as the Eternals, who must reunite after 7,000 years on Earth to protect the human race from their evil counterparts, known as Deviants. Before Zhao made her MCU debut with Eternals, she became only the second woman in history, after The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow in 2010, to win the Academy Award for Best Director for her drama Nomadland.

For fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the infrequency of physical intimacy in the film series has become almost a running joke. While sex has been suggested a few times in Marvel movies, starting with Tony Stark’s (fully clothed) encounter with a journalist in Iron Man, many viewers have picked up on the Disney-owned franchise’s reluctance to even show their heroes kissing. The issue is more pressing than might be expected for a family-friendly film series, as it can prove difficult to make real strides in, say, LGBTQ+ representation when on-screen depictions of sexuality are all but absent.

Eternals, however, has broken ground by including the MCU’s first sex scene, between Richard Madden’s Ikaris and Gemma Chan’s Sersi, whose centuries-old romance plays a key role in the film’s story. And, in an interview with THR, Zhao says she was the only one hesitant to include it. The director describes Disney as incredibly supportive of the scene and the way it played out in the movie:

We knew that to tell a mature love story, a love story that spans thousands of years, to not do any kind of intimate scene felt unnatural to me. And everyone was on the same page. Once we filmed it and edited it together, we did show some folks to see their reactions. And everyone, Disney as well, said, ‘That is a beautiful display of love,’ [regarding] the way our actors played it together and the way it fit into the mood and where it is in the film. So everyone was like, ‘Let’s do it!’ If anything, I was the one who was like, ‘Is it okay? Can we do this?’ But everyone was supportive of that.

The 26th film in the MCU, Eternals boasts an ensemble cast that includes such seasoned industry names as Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie, as well as Game of Thrones stars Madden and Kit Harington. After suffering pandemic-related release delays and having its official premiere in October, the movie will finally hit theaters in the United States on November 5th. Most Disney releases have an exclusive 45-day theatrical run before being available to stream on Disney+, so fans wanting to watch from home will have to wait until at least mid-December.

The diversity of the Eternals cast, which includes Marvel’s first gay and deaf superheroes, has been met with a lot of positivity. Many are hoping the film will set the standard for representation in future Marvel instalments, and while it could also be a step toward normalizing PDA in the MCU, that’s far less likely. Disney remains a risk-averse studio, and while the Eternals are lesser-known characters that allow for greater experimentation on Zhao’s part, it’s hard to see them risking the marketability of their marquee heroes to children by depicting them in the throes of passion.
