Do Zelda Amiibo Work In Animal Crossing New Horizons

When the Sanrio amiibo collection was released for Animal Crossing: New Horizons the software update was available to Nintendo Switch owners before the amiibo packet was released in stores. This meant that players who had purchased the previous set of Sanrio amiibos, originally released for Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo, could use these cards to summon Sanrio characters before the official release. So does that mean other amiibo, like ones from Legend of Zelda, could be useful to players now too?

In past Animal Crossing installments, players were able to use amiibo from games like Super Smash Bros. to invite characters that represented those from the amiibo. The invited character would show up in an RV and stay at the player’s campsite. Some characters could then be invited to live on the player’s island, or would have a selection of items that could only be purchased from that particular character. For instance, amiibo figures and cards from games like Splatoon would call in villagers that were modeled after Splatoon characters, like Cece, the peppy squirrel villager that takes the likeness of Callie from the Squidsisters.

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, other new villagers were introduced via the Legend of Zelda amiibo figures. Villagers such as Wolf Link, Medli, and Ganon, could all be summoned to the campsite via an amiibo. This was part of the Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo update that gave players access to almost all of the amiibos that Nintendo made at the time, including the Villager amiibo from Super Smash Bros., which feels counter-intuitive given that the Villager character from the game is just a generic player-character from Animal Crossing. So does this mean more Zelda amiibo can be used in New Horizons too?

When Will Animal Crossing: New Horizons Get Zelda Characters

In every previous Animal Crossing installment, there have been nods to the Legend of Zelda series. Either through items or sneaky dialogue. In Animal Crossing: Wild World, players could even find the Master Sword that came complete with sound effects. However, the Legend of Zelda amiibo currently don’t work for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but this doesn’t necessarily mean a crossover won’t happen eventually.

In March of 2021 Nintendo released a set of Super Mario items for Animal Crossing: New Horizons as part of the 35th anniversary celebration for the Super Mario series. Players can order these Super Mario-themed items from the Nook Shopping app on their in-game phone, and stock up on 1-Up Mushrooms or dress up as Princess Peach. However, another huge Nintendo franchise – The Legend of Zelda – is also celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, even though Nintendo has yet to pay it much mind.

Released on February 21st, 1986, The Legend of Zelda turned 35 this year, and fans were disappointed by Nintendo’s lack of fanfare. So far, the only release in this series set for 2021 is a remake of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which is set for July. Though it is strange that Nintendo didn’t release Legend of Zelda items for the 35th anniversary, it seems only a matter of time before Animal Crossing: New Horizons will see a Legend of Zelda update.
