The following contains major spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Digital artist César Castillo Marquez captured the terrifying elements of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with an intense movie poster that pays homage to an infamous body horror film.
The image, uploaded on Twitter by Marquez, invokes the imagery of the poster for 2009’s The Human Centipede (First Sequence). It features several outstretched hands and distorted faces of the variants of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, the antagonist of the Doctor Strange sequel.
The Human Centipede (First Sequence) was written and directed by Tom Six and released in 2009. The film follows two American tourists in Germany who are kidnapped by a crazed surgeon and sewn together with a third person to create the titular human centipede. While it received an overall mixed response from critics, The Human Centipede (First Sequence) went on to win prominent awards at several international film festivals, including the Screamfest Horror Film Festival and the Sainte Maxime International Horror Film Festival.
Director Sam Raimi is a veteran of horror storytelling with classic titles like the Evil Dead franchise and Drag Me to Hell under his belt, and he brought his expertise and flair for the genre to Multiverse of Madness. Raimi revealed during a recent press conference that he was excited about contributing to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first foray into horror. “I was able to take those horror films that I made in my youth and [use] what I had learned from them building suspense sequences, titillating the audience,” the director explained.
Even though The Human Centipede is not one of them, there are ample references to classic and beloved horror films and series throughout Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This includes visual references to George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead (1985) and Gore Verbinski’s The Ring (2002). Moreover, there are multiple moments when Wanda bears striking resemblance to the titular character in Carrie (1976) and Jack Torrance from The Shining (1980).
While incorporating horror elements is a recent development for the MCU, the character of Doctor Strange himself is also rooted in the horror genre. In fact, the character was inspired by legendary actor Vincent Price who starred in horror classics like The Fly (1958), House on Haunted Hill (1959) and The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971).
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters.
