In early 2013, news of Matt Smith’s departure from his role as the Eleventh Doctor reminded Whovians of Doctor Who’s cyclical nature. After much speculation and fan-casting, Award-winning Scottish actor Peter Capaldi was revealed as the Twelfth Doctor during a special BBC broadcast.

Capaldi brought a much-needed new perspective to the time-traveling madman with a box, a more subdued version of the character that reminded many of the first few Doctors and differed greatly from Tennant and Smith’s famous incarnations. Throughout his time on the show, the Twelfth Doctor provided fans with plenty of memorable quotes.

In “The Zygon Inversion,” the Doctor continues to engage with Bonnie, the Zygon leader who has taken on Clara’s appearance. In an effort to reason with her, the Doctor reminds her that it’d be in everyone’s best interests to talk it all out instead of causing a nonsensical war, that all she has to do is listen and think, and she’ll eventually change her mind. The Twelfth Doctor formally took over the show’s lead role in “Deep Breath,” the first episode of season eight. Aside from also introducing Missy and marking the return of the Paternoster Gang, the episode also served as the audience’s first look into the Twelfth Doctor’s personality.

While dealing with the Half-Face Man, a futuristic droid wreaking havoc in Victorian London, the Doctor incorrectly accuses him of luring him and Clara into danger. Having realized his error, the Doctor then explains that he hates being wrong in public and urges everyone to forget it ever happened.

Now without his precious memories, the Doctor encounters Clara in a diner in Nevada, where he plays her a vaguely familiar song to him that turns out to be Clara’s theme. When she asks if it’s a sad song, the Doctor merely replies that things are only ever sad when they’re truly over.

True to the character’s Shakespearean persona, as exhibited in “Heaven Sent,” the Twelfth Doctor indulges in a long speech that reaffirms his purpose as someone who must always put love and kindness before everything else. These words had previously appeared in the 50th anniversary and remain the Doctor’s motto as he regenerates into his thirteenth incarnation.

Peter Capaldi is arguably one of the best actors to take on the role of the Doctor, giving the character a much-needed edge that resonated with many fans of the long-running series. While some Whovians believe his reign to be lackluster due to some questionable writing, there’s no denying that most were devastated to see him let the Doctor go.
