Doctor Who Edge of Reality Debuts the Franchises Most Frightening Cyberman

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Maze Theory’s Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, available now.

The Cybermen are one of Doctor Who’s oldest and most frightening monsters. Throughout the franchise’s 58-year history, the Doctor has gone up against the Cybermen on multiple occasions, and the metallic villains always returned deadlier than ever. Due to their robotic nature, the Cybermen have had the ability to reinvent themselves with upgrades that have continuously made them more haunting and nearly unstoppable. In Season 12 alone, Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor went up against four new iterations of the Cybermen: the Lone Cyberman, the Cyber Drones and the Cyber Warriors, as well as the Time Lord/Cybermen hybrids, the Cyber Masters.

Now, Maze Theory’s Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality continues that trend by unleashing a new Cyberman created solely for the VR-inspired video game: the CyberReaper, who already ranks as one of the most frightening villains in the Doctor Who franchise.

In Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, players are the Thirteenth Doctor’s new human companion. With reality itself hacked by the Reality Virus, all of time and space are being affected and the universe is in peril. The Doctor is trapped at the edge of time, so it’s up to the players to find three Time Crystals that will allow her to return and stop the villain that unleashed the virus. Players then travel across time and space to find these crystals and, in doing so, come up against plenty of villains, both new and old.

Each level contains its own adversaries, but there is one that appears sporadically in every location: the CyberReaper. At first, the CyberReaper appears as a ghost-like presence, a glitching wraith only present for a few seconds. Each of his appearances are unsettling, and they create an eerie aura around the character. Throughout the game, we get a bit of information about the CyberReaper, who is more of a legend than anything. It’s said that it is incredibly old, and that throughout time, it has upgraded itself with the parts of other deceased Cybermen. In other words, the CyberReaper is essentially a Frankenstein’s Monster of Cybermen, made up of bits of pieces of different iconic iterations of the robotic villains.

The CyberReaper remains a ghost story throughout the game, but it finally appears in the end as the final boss. With purple electricity continuously sizzling around it, the CyberReaper chases the players non-stop as they race to complete their mission to help the Doctor. The CyberReaper then becomes an unstoppable threat, one that can’t be fought or reasoned with, and users can only run away from the monster before it catches up to them.

If the idea of a Cyberman on the levels of a big screen movie monster isn’t frightening enough, The Edge of Reality ups the ante by revealing what the CyberReaper is truly after: the Doctor. The villain sees the Doctor as the ultimate soldier, a theme that’s been explored before in the television series. But here, the CyberReaper’s unique ability to upgrade itself means that it wishes to assimilate the Doctor, to better itself with parts from the perfect warrior. Having a CyberReaper made up of parts of the Doctor is a frightening idea — and it’s a goal that the villain is thankfully unable to achieve.

As the video game comes to a close, the CyberReaper is defeated, but that doesn’t mean it may not somehow return to plague the universe once more. For now, the villain has been confined to The Edge of Reality but, hopefully, it will make the jump to the television screen further down the road to terrorize all fans of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Steam and coming to Nintendo Switch Oct. 21.
