Scream 2022 Gives the Ghostface Mask a HighTech Upgrade With Big Implications

In the annals of horror and pop culture in general, the Ghostface mask is one of the most iconic visuals around. It bred terror in the ’90s thanks to Wes Craven’s Scream, with various killers using the mask in four movies thus far, as well as in the non-canon TV series. Now, in the final trailer for the fifth film, it seems the mask will be getting a high-tech upgrade with big implications.

Around the 0:36 mark, there’s a close-up of Ghostface’s mask where the killer activates something inside. It makes a mechanical sound and a red light appears, hinting the slasher may be using a camera to record the murders. This suggests Ghostface is making a horror movie of his own, which is further backed up by Sidney saying, “I’ve seen this movie before.”

However, Ghostface replies, “Not this movie!” which indicates a more literal approach. Given how meta Scream has always been, poking fun at the slasher genre and its rules, it’d fit the ethos of past killers: namely, Mickey from the second movie, who was documenting victims. He didn’t record the actual kills, but as a film student, it was all part of an experiment, informing his ambition of being arrested and playing the victim in the upcoming trial.

Mickey, after all, blamed movies for his problem; this was a stark contrast to Billy and Stu in the original Scream, who just said movies made murderers like them more creative. Well, nothing’s more creative than this first-person perspective, which would also tie into the mastermind of it all: Roman from the third film.

He was Sid’s half-brother and the director of Stab 3, who orchestrated it all. Roman turned the bloodbath into a cinematic vision while revealing that he was the one who sent Billy the info about how Sid’s mom, Maureen, ruined his family life. Thus, Roman basically scripted Billy and his mom, Debbie’s journey to becoming killers before donning the mask himself.

However, this goes way beyond theatrics and tops what Roman tried to do. In addition, a movie within a movie is a norm for the series, as the second movie focused on Stab, featuring Tori Spelling as herself playing Sid — all inspired by Gale Weathers’ book. Of course, Roman was making a movie within a movie too, but not as direct or real as this.

Thus, if Ghostface is indeed documenting the kills, it proves the slasher has evolved in a most sadistic way. Given how content is consumed and craved by audiences these days, it’d match how Scream always wants to hold a mirror up to viewers to reflect that while they may label people as monsters, they’re the hypocrites who enjoy their bloody work.

Trust no one and suspect everyone in 2022’s Scream, slashing into theaters on Jan. 14.
