Doctor Who Is Chibnall Stealing The Tenth Doctor’s Ending

Throughout his time on Doctor Who, showrunner Chris Chibnall has already shown a number of attempts at recreating RTD’s era, but after Flux, he appears to be directly lifting the Tenth Doctor’s ending for Thirteen’s finale. The thirteenth season of Doctor Who, entitled Flux, tells one story spread across six episodes. It’s the final full season for both Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker who will leave the series after a run of specials in 2022. The first of those specials, “Eve of the Daleks”, is set to premiere on New Year’s Day.

Chibnall’s tenure at the helm of Doctor Who has been met with a mixed reception. Despite a great deal of enthusiasm surrounding his casting of Whittaker as the first female Doctor Who, her era has been widely criticized for both its controversial Timeless Child retcon, and its overall writing quality. Following his tenure, Chibnall will be succeeded in 2023 by Russell T. Davies, the original showrunner for the revived series.

While Flux borrowed its format from the Classic series, Chibnall looks to be copying David Tennant’s final Doctor Who episodes for the ending to his own time on the show. It’s a logical source of inspiration as David Tennant had one of the most iconic regenerations in Doctor Who, and Chibnall has referenced the Tenth Doctor era multiple times. But, rather than a subtle nod, it looks like The Thirteenth Doctor’s regeneration is gearing up to be a carbon copy, with both series’ seemingly revolving around an almost identical prophecy.

Season 13, episode 6, “The Vanquishers” shows The Doctor finally face-to-face with the embodiment of Time, one of the primary forces behind the events of Flux. Time tells The Doctor, “Your time is heading to its end,” adding that The Doctor should beware the forces opposing her, “And their Master.” It’s a grim portent of The Doctor’s imminent demise, heading toward a finale pitting The Doctor against The Master. This is almost identical to the prophecy told to the Tenth Doctor in season 4, episode 3, “Planet of the Ood,” leading to a finale where The Doctor was pitted against The Master.

If the narrative similarities weren’t enough, Thirteen’s run also looks to conclude with the same storytelling format. In lieu of a fifth series, David Tennant’s run ended with five specials to accommodate the series being handed over to a new showrunner. Met with a similar obstacle, it looks like Chibnall has opted for the same solution. While the total number of specials is fewer, the end of Whittaker’s run as the Thirteenth Doctor is going to end with the exact same kind of special format.

It looks like Thirteen’s finale might also be striving for the same kind of emotional notes as Tennant’s Tenth Doctor regeneration. “The Vanquishers” features a scene where The Doctor tearfully reflects on her life, saying, “I was looking for… information… about me.” It shows The Doctor at a point in her life where she is mournfully focused on her sense of identity. It demonstrates just the same kind of vanity that also defined the Tenth Doctor’s ending in Doctor Who and sets up that she too won’t want to go.
