Does Maze Runner The Death Cure Have a PostCredits Scene

Twentieth Century Fox’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure brings the YA dystopian film franchise to a close, but is there post-credits scene for die-hard fans teasing more? The first film in The Maze Runner series hit theaters in 2014, arriving amid similar blockbusters based on YA dystopian sci-fi like The Hunger Games and Divergent. However, after star Dylan O’Brien was injured on set of The Death Cure, the third and final film in the Maze Runner trilogy was delayed a year and now arrives long after The Hunger Games wrapped up its run and the Divergent film series ended before its conclusion due to extremely lackluster box office returns.

Still, for fans of author James Dashner’s The Maze Runner YA trilogy, The Death Cure brings the stories of Thomas (O’Brien), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Theresa (Kaya Scodelario), and Minho (Ki Hong Lee) to a conclusion on the big screen. But, fans have been wondered whether the third film completely close the door on the world of The Maze Runner, or if The Death Cure would have a post-credits scene setting up even more movies in this universe.

Although the film credits are always worth sitting through for a chance to see who was involved in making a film, Maze Runner: The Death Cure does not have a post-credits scene. The movie wraps up completely before the credits start to roll.

Are The Maze Runner Prequels Being Turned Into Movies?

As fans of the books know, of course, The Death Cure certainly had the potential to include a post-credits scene based on the final book in the Maze Runner trilogy. Dashner’s The Death Cure includes an epilogue – which is arguably the book version of a post-credits scene – from the perspective of the Chancellor of WCKD Ava Paige (played in the film by Patricia Clarkson) that reveals the origin of the Flare virus that turns humans into zombie-like Cranks. The virus was distributed among humans by the government as population control following a solar flare that devastated the Earth. However, while the virus was expected to kill those infected quickly and stop spreading, it didn’t and became a major threat to humankind.

This epilogue explains a great deal about the world of The Maze Runner, so it’s possible it would have helped moviegoers to understand the mythology of this sci-fi universe if it had been included in The Death Cure as a post-credits scene. However, the book’s epilogue also worked to set up two prequel novels – The Kill Order and The Fever Code – so it’s likely a post-credits scene similar to Ava Paige’s epilogue could have been read as setting up future films. But, with Hollywood moving on from the YA dystopian sci-fi trend inspired by The Hunger Games, it seems incredibly unlikely 20th Century Fox is looking to make more movies in The Maze Runner franchise.

Still, while the ending of Maze Runner: The Death Cure does bring the current storyline to an end, the possibility is always there for director Wes Ball and screenwriter T.S. Nowlin to further explore the Maze Runner world through prequels. That is, of course, if The Death Cure is a massive success at the box office. For now, it seems The Maze Runner franchise has come to a close.
