Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

Dune (2021) has proven to be an excellent new sci-fi movie sensation and its comparison to Star Wars is endless. According to an article on Den Of Geek, George Lucas had been greatly inspired by Frank Herbert’s novel so it wouldn’t be all that surprising if fans are able to see the many comparisons between the plots or metaphors.

There’s bound to even be a lot of comparisons between the characters if fans take a closer look at their arcs. From the two Emperors’ common rules to Paul and Luke’s almost identical protagonist journies, each and every character has a counterpart.

Padishah Emperor & Emperor Palpatine

Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

The Padishah Emperor rules over the Imperium and Known Universe. Although he is a major player in the world of Dune, the Emperor is never shown in the movie. He acts as a puppet master behind the scenes, replacing Harkonnen with House Atreides to rule Arrakis, knowing the inevitable conflict.

Emperor Palpatine similarly rules over the Galactic Empire in Star Wars. However, unlike Dune’s Emperor, he works his way up to that position, who inherited the position. Palpatine manipulated his way to the top, ensuing chaos with the Clone Wars and near extermination of the Jedi Order. But as Emperor, he tends to work in the shadows, also acting as a puppet master.

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen & Darth Vader

Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen is the head of House Harkonnen and a sworn enemy of House Atreides. Before the Emperor hands it over to Duke Leto, Arrakis is under the Baron’s rule. He doesn’t take this change easily, going out of the Emperor’s rule to overthrow the Atreides.

Darth Vader is very much similar in that he hunts down the Jedi Order as his sworn enemy. Working up to overthrowing the Emporer, Vader trains secret apprentices and Dark Jedi, but he never gets the chance to attempt a takeover. He remains the Emperor’s enforcer as the Rebel Alliance tries to take back the Republic.

Gaius Helen Mohiam & Yoda

Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

Gaius Helen Mohiam is one of the most powerful characters in Dune. She is a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother and the Emperor’s Truthsayer in addition to Jessica’s teacher. She also has deceitful ties with the Harkonnen’s that aid in the fall of House Atreides. Among each of these parties, she commands respect and instills fear.

One of the most powerful characters in Star Wars is Yoda. He is head of the Jedi Council in the prequels and Luke’s teacher in the original trilogy. Despite his small gremlin-like appearance, he is a mighty Jedi Master. Yoda also expresses immense wisdom (similar to the Reverand Mother’s level of wisdom) through odd wording and bizarre actions, such as the unique teaching methods he uses with Luke.

Gurney Halleck & Poe Dameron

Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

As chief officer of the Atreides army and Paul’s private weapons tutor, Gurney is a skilled swordsman. He’s also stoic and wary of going into Harkonnen when Harkonnens previously tortured him. One of the bravest characters in Dune, Gurney doesn’t hesitate to charge during the invasion of Arkis despite the terrible odds.

Similarly, Poe possesses a brave disposition with his tactical skill being piloting. He’s one of Leia’s most trusted allies, just as Gurney is a trusted and loyal leader to the Atreides army. He’s often turned to for the most daring of missions. Poe also shares the experience of torture from the enemy after his capturing by the First Order.

Liet Kynes & Finn

Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

Liet Kynes is The Judge of the Change, a supposedly neutral party among the Emperor, House Atreides, and Fremen. In accordance with the Emperor, she shouldn’t be choosing sides. However, she risks her life for them, as Paul notes in one of his best quotes in Dune and reveals where her true loyalties lie in the end.

This is also similar to Finn, who was a unique character from the Star Wars sequels. Previous to this trilogy, Stormtroopers were just faceless bad guys. Finn allows everyone to see what’s under those helmets. He didn’t choose to be a Stormtrooper; he was pretty much born into the role. Finn’s also similar to Liet in that he chooses his own path instead of his given one.

Duncan Idaho & Han Solo

Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

One of Dune’s most likable characters, Duncan, is a skilled swordsman and fighter. He’s also a courageous character, skilled in diplomacy and charisma, as he fairly easily makes a connection with the elusive Fremen. He is fiercely brave and loyal to the Atreides, with his final act defending Paul and Jessica with his life.

Han Solo is similarly one of the most beloved characters of the Star Wars franchise. He shares the same charming sarcasm and charismatic attitude that Duncan has. Despite his cocky and arrogant surface, Han is capable of numerous selfless acts, primarily when it comes to the ones he loves and he’s no doubt as brave as Duncan, committing the most sacrificial act by risking his life to bring his son back home.

Duke Leto Atreides & Obi-Wan Kanobi

Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

The head of House Atreides, Duke Leto, is an intelligent and compassionate leader. He possesses a strong sense of morality, doing everything he can to keep his family safe and risking his life for his people. In a final act of bravery, Leto sacrifices his life by biting into a poison-filled tooth in an attempt to kill Baron.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is also a man of high morale. He strongly believes in those he cares about and he’s also a very skilled fighter. Obi-Wan’s final act is also one of braveness. Similar to Leto, he goes 0ut by distracting Darth Vader to help the others escape.

Lady Jessica & Padmé Amidala

Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

Lady Jessica faces many obstacles to protect herself and her son. She’ll do anything to keep him safe. Lady Jessica quickly adapts to the harsh desert brutality and respects the Fremen when showcasing her combat skills.

Padmé gets elected Queen of Naboo at age 14, where she similarly adapts quickly to intense pressures. She has strong morals that don’t waiver and doesn’t abuse her power. She’ll never give up on those she’s bound to protect, just as Jessica will never give up on Paul.

Chani & Princess Leia

Dune (2021) Characters & Their Star Wars Counterparts

While her brief appearance gives her much character definition, Chani seems strong and kind-hearted. She shows her compassionate nature by saying she wouldn’t have hesitated to kill Paul if he hurt her friends but also giving Paul bravery her great aunt’s crysknife, so he can “die with honor.”

One of the most powerful women in a sci-fi movie, Leia is also strong and kind-hearted and opinionated and decisive. She loves the galaxy as she spends her whole life fighting to make it a better place, which seems like something Chani would do, wanting the Fremen set free from the Emperor’s rule. Leia is a strong force to be reckoned with and has a compassionate side for her people and her loved ones.

Paul Atreides & Luke Skywalker

Paul is a hero protagonist on a journey. He begins the movie as the Duke’s heir, unwanting of the position. As the movie progresses, Paul comes into his power and his role as The One. He becomes stronger and more aware as time goes on (and in doing so, he finds out where he truly belongs).

Almost the same story goes for Luke. He is another protagonist on a hero’s journey. At the start of the franchise, Luke is a moisture farmer on Tatooine, longing for something beyond his simple life. He moves on to become a fighter pilot for the rebel alliance and a Jedi knight who aids in the destruction of the Empirical rule. In contrast, Paul hasn’t gotten that far yet in Villeneuve’s adaptation, but he’s on his way.
