Dune Characters Sorted Into Their Game of Thrones Houses

Both Dune and Game of Thrones are epic storytelling, with grand conflicts that play out over the vastness of space and a continent, respectively. They also engage with similar issues, with both addressing the fraught question of power, who wields it, and who finds themselves ground down by those who do. And, most importantly, they are both full of fascinating characters that exhibit all of the contradictions of real people.

It is thus especially useful to think of the characters of Dune in terms of just where they would fit into the nobility of the Seven Kingdoms.

Duke Leto – House Stark

There are quite a few similarities between Duke Leto (one of Oscar Isaac’s best roles) and Ned Stark.

Both are thrust into a leadership position that they don’t want–Leto as being in charge of spice production and Ned to be the Hand of the King–and both ultimately let their sense of duty and honor get in the way of the sort of brutal politicking and scheming that would have allowed them to survive the machinations of those who wanted to destroy them.

Baron Harkonnen – House Lannister

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen is the sinister villain of Dune, and he is one of the Imperium’s most powerful characters, forging a strange alliance with none other than one of the Bene Gesserit.

He has many similarities with those who occupy House Lannister, in particular Tywin, who was known for being a ruthless political operator. More than anything else, the Baron is determined to see to it that his family not only holds onto power but also manages to become one of the most dominant families in the Imperium.

Duncan Idaho – House Baratheon

Given that he’s played by Jason Momoa, who has played so many likable characters, Duncan Idaho is one of the most charming and charismatic players in the movie. He is also steadfastly loyal to House Atreides, even though it ultimately ends up costing him his life at the hands of the Emperor’s Shadaukar.

As a result of these character traits, he fits in very well with House Baratheon members, whose family tend to look at life in simple terms and who are renowned for their ability to charm anyone that they encounter.

Gurney Halleck – House Stark

Gurney Halleck is, like all of those who have sworn their service to House Atreides, incredibly loyal. He also harbors a profound hatred of the Harkonnens, and he is determined to make sure that Paul, at least, is ready to face any challenge or assassination threat that comes his way.

He is also steadfast and dependable, just the kind of person that would fit in well with House Stark, a noble house that is noted for both its sense of honor and duty and for its martial skill.

Lady Jessica – House Tyrell

Lady Jessica is one of the more enigmatic characters in Dune, and she never reveals too much of what she’s thinking. However, she always has an eye out for her son and for helping to forge the type of alliances that will keep him alive and allow him to flourish on Arrakis.

She would make a very good fit for House Tyrell, which is well known for producing the types of women who are more politically canny than they are given credit for being, most notably Margaery and Lady Olenna.

Liet Kynes – House Arryn

Liet Kynes is another rather contradictory figure in the movie, for while she considers herself an impartial representative of the Emperor, she ultimately proves willing to intervene once she realizes that Paul is vital to the planet and that the Harkonnens are traitors.

In that sense, she has a lot in common with House Arryn, who is known for largely keeping out of the conflicts of the Seven Kingdoms until they are sure that it is wise for them to intervene.

Stilgar – House Martell

As one of the leaders of the Fremen, Stilgar has a rigid sense of duty and responsibility, and he will never let sentimentality get in the way of what he sees as his duty to his people. In fact, he comes very close to doing away with Paul and Lady Jessica altogether, until they prove how powerful and how useful they are.

In that sense, he has a lot in common with the members of House Martell, who are also known for their pragmatic sense of politics, as when Prince Doran largely takes a passive approach to the affairs of the kingdom, waiting for just the right chance to strike.

Chani – House Martell

Though she only hovers at the edge of the narrative in the movie, it’s clear that there’s a great deal going on behind Chani’s piercing blue eyes. Like Stilgar, she’s not afraid to use violence when it comes to defending her people and their rights.

That’s exactly why she would make a good addition to House Martell, whose members, particularly the Sand Snakes, have shown time and again that they will do whatever they can to both protect and avenge their allies, friends, and loved ones.

Reverend Mother Mohiam – House Frey

The Reverend Mother Mohiam is another sinister character, quite capable and willing to sacrifice anyone or anything that doesn’t fit in with her organization’s plans for the Imperium. She is also willing to stand on the sidelines until she knows who will be the eventual victor.

In her willingness to forge unsavory political alliances, she is very much like the members of House Frey, members of whom (including Lord Walder Frey) are willing to destroy anyone that isn’t useful to them.

Paul Atreides – House Targaryen

Paul is the movie’s reluctant hero, the young man blessed (or cursed) with being essentially a messiah. Though he’s a reluctant one, he eventually shoulders his duty, knowing that it is his fate to lead the Imperium and the cosmos, thus proving that he’s one of the movie’s bravest characters.

This trait is very much in keeping with House Targaryen, whose members almost always see themselves as the saviors of mankind, no matter how many people they have to destroy in the process of seeing their dreams fulfilled.
