Dungeons & Dragons The Mages Of Strixhaven Are Now Playable In D&D

The latest information on the future of Dungeons & Dragons has been released, and one of the new changes allows players to use the five Mages of Strixhaven subclasses. Strixhaven is the name of a university for mages in Magic: The Gathering, making it the latest crossover D&D has had with it.

D&D has received several campaign setting books that are based on locations from Magic: The Gathering. These have included Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica and Mythic Odysseys of Theros. The next Magic: The Gathering campaign book will be Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos, which is due to be released on November 16, 2021. Strixhaven is broken up into five different colleges, each of which specializes in different fields of magic.

Wizards of the Coast releases Unearthed Arcana articles on its official website, which have playtest material for players to use, since it’s content that is being refined for future books. Fans have been able to guess what books are in the pipeline based on these articles, with the Rabbitfolk/Fairy lineage article hinting that a Feywild book was on the way, which turned out to be The Wild Beyond the Witchlight. The latest Unearthed Arcana article is a case of the book being revealed before the playtest material, as Wizards of the Coast wouldn’t have been able to obfuscate the fact that Mages of Strixhaven are coming to the game as subclasses.

D&D: The Colors Of Magic In Strixhaven

The latest Unearthed Arcana article adds five subclasses to the game. What makes these D&D subclasses unique is that they can be taken by multiple classes. The five subclasses are: Mage of Lorehold (Bard, Warlock, and Wizard); Mage of Prismari (Druid, Sorcerer, and Wizard); Mage of Quandrix (Sorcerer and Wizard); Mage of Silverquill (Bard, Warlock, and Wizard); and Mage of Witherbloom (Druid and Warlock). Mages of Lorehold have the ability to summon a spirit that can aid them in battle or grant them knowledge; Mages or Prismari are elementalists, with the ability to empower their spells; Mages of Quandrix use mathematics and physics in their spells, allowing to them to influence the world around them; Mages of Silverquill can damage the willpower of their enemies with their magical words; and Mages of Witherbloom can influence the life force within creatures, giving them the powers of healers and necromancers.

There are a ton of options available in the Mages of Strixhaven Unearthed Arcana article, and the fact that the subclasses are spread across multiple classes is an exciting look at what other character concepts could be made available in the future. The current edition of Dungeons & Dragons isn’t friendly to multiclass characters, but a more open version of subclasses could alleviate this issue.
