It is the age of franchising right now, in Hollywood and arguably everywhere else. Every studio out there is trying to build its own cinematic universe, from the MCU to the Monsterverse. For an upcoming film or series of films, being part of a franchise guarantees a certain level of popularity and financial stability, which is what almost every film producer and production company strive for. One of the factors that affect the success of a franchise is its cast of actors, who will literally be the face of it.
Actors like Dwayne Johnson and Tom Cruise have built a reputation for being able to drive entire movies based on their sole acting prowess. The list below looks at ten such people whose star-power has made them worthy of headlining multiple blockbuster franchises at once.
10 Andy Serkis
Andy Serkis is an actor not known by his face, but his voice. His most famous role is undeniably the creepy and raspy, yet iconic voice of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings franchise. In the Planet of the Apes series the main character of Ceaser was based on his motion-capture performance, and so was Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
On the live-action side of things, he is one of the actors who have been (or in this case, will be) in both Marvel and DC films. As the villain Ulysses Klaue in the MCU and Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming The Batman film.
9 Sigourney Weaver
The first female badass in cinema history, Sigourney Weaver paved the way for women in modern-day action movies with 1979’s Alien and its sequel. In 1984 she appeared in one of her other notable, albeit less action-filled parts, as Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters, a role she will be taking up again for the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Besides also being part of the blockbuster Avatar franchise, she is also technically in the MCU as well, having played one of the antagonists in Marvel’s The Defenders.
8 Hugo Weaving
English actor Hugo Weaving first came under the international limelight as the iconic villain Agent Smith in the Matrix series. Besides the Matrix he was simultaneously acting in The Lord of the Rings films as the half-elf Elrond, a role he would take up again in 2012’s The Hobbit.
One of the oldest villains in the MCU, Red Skull, was also played by him, and he has also done notable work in the voice acting department as well, such as the voice of Megatron in the Transformers franchise.
7 Johnny Depp
The man responsible for single-handedly carrying a $4.5 billion franchise for over 15 years, Johnny Depp’s first step in the world of cinema was in the classic slasher film A Nightmare on Elm Street that kickstarted the horror franchise.
His character of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean is memorable and iconic on a legendary level, whose quirkiness he brings to other films as well such as Alice in Wonderland. Having played the villain Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts films, he is also a part of the greater Harry Potter franchise.
6 Karl Urban
In terms of fictional settings, Karl Urban has been up to the far reaches of space as Leonard McCoy in Star Trek and has also fought against the dark forces of Mordor as Éomer in The Lord of the Rings.
In between, he also appeared in The Chronicles of Riddick and the recent Judge Dredd reboot, which wasn’t a financially successful venture but well received by fans and critics which keeps the hope of a sequel alive. Alongside his role as Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok, he is also leading Amazon’s hit The Boys series.
5 Vin Diesel
The Fast & Furious franchise has helped make its cast of actors into some of the biggest names in Hollywood, and Vin Diesel is one of them. The XXX and Riddick franchises both revolve around him as well, as he plays the main protagonist in all of the movies.
As part of the MCU, he gets paid millions to say the three words “I am Groot” over and over again. There is no telling when the sequel films to 2009’s Avatar will be released, but Vin Diesel has been confirmed to be playing a part in them.
4 Harrison Ford
Harrison Ford became a household name overnight through his role as Han Solo in Star Wars. He probably could’ve made a career just out of the fame from Star Wars, but he also went on to star as the titular protagonist in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones films.
A year after that, he would also star in Blade Runner, which wasn’t a very big hit at the time of its release but now is recognized as one of the best sci-fi films of all time. Somewhere along the line, he managed to make two Jack Ryan films as well.
3 Cate Blanchett
Like many of her generation, Cate Blanchett started her career through stage plays before shifting to indie films and then bigger and bigger hits with films such as 1998’s Elizabeth and 1999’s Talented Mr. Ripley. It wasn’t until 2001 when The Lord of the Rings franchise, like it had done so for many of its cast members, truly made her a famous superstar actress.
Playing the part of the main antagonist in Indiana Jones 4, she would go on to portray one of MCU’s best villains in recent years as Hela. The fourth film of the Ocean series, Ocean’s 8, also featured her as one of the leading characters.
2 Samuel L. Jackson
As the highest-grossing actor on the planet and well over a hundred films under his name, there are few things Samuel L. Jackson hasn’t been a part of throughout his mind-blowingly prolific career. He has done cult-classic films like and Pulp Fiction and worked with some of the most respected directors in the industry such as Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg.
The major franchises that he is or has been a part of are Die Hard, the Unbreakable trilogy, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, the XXX series, the Monsterverse, and of course his biggest hit, the MCU.
1 Dwayne Johnson
Many actors have held the title of being the most bankable over the years, as in, the most likely to draw in an audience, and right now it is Dwayne Johnson’s time to do so. A professional wrestler in a past life, he started transitioning into films with The Mummy franchise.
His second franchise role came in the form of Luke Hobbs in 2011’s Fast and Five, following which he also entered the G.I. Joe series of films. Additionally, he is also the star of the recent Jumanji and will become a part of the DCEU with the upcoming Black Adam film.
