Comics Superstar Alex Ross Exhibit Opens In Ohio Art Museum

Iconic comic book artist Alex Ross is being spotlighted in an exhibit at the Canton Museum of Art located in Ohio. “Marvelocity: The Art of Alex Ross” pays tribute to the illustrator’s work for Marvel Comics through the years, bringing life to Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, and several other heroes.

Known for his photorealistic paintings in comics, Alex Ross has worked within the DC, Marvel, and Star Wars universes, among many others. The top tier creator has given fans insight into his process in previously published books archiving his sketches and concept art, titled Rough Justice and Marvelocity. The illustrator has stood out from other artists in the medium, by grounding the fantastical in the real world.

Now, Alex Ross’ work for Marvel Comics has an exhibit of its own at Ohio’s Canton Museum of Art titled “Marvelocity: The Art of Alex Ross,” open through March 6, 2022. Based on the book he published with Chip Kidd, the exhibit brings attention to his take on the Avengers, Spider-Man, and many other heroes. Speaking on the work featured in the exhibit, Ross said, “You’re hoping to relate a sense of energy, urgency and enthusiasm to people that there’s a lightning of spirit that comes out of superheroes that has always worked for me… It’s a visual metaphor. And that metaphor can be for a lot of things, but it’s mostly just about the energy and enthusiasm that can be found in the fun of life.”

While fans can appreciate Ross’ photorealistic depictions of the Marvel Universe, they can also learn how Ross became the pioneering artist he is in the comics industry. As the exhibit includes art that he did as a child, visitors can see how far he came as he committed to the craft. Ross recollected his initial interest in Marvel as a boy, saying, ”From the very, very beginning, Marvel was probably the center point of my comics experience because I went from drawing things based around fairytales and storybooks. Things like ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ were things I was drawing when I was 3, but once I saw Spider-Man at the age 4, my interest turned really sharply in that direction, and so for the remainder of my life, I was drawing characters focusing around superhero themes.”

As Canton Museum of Art brings deserved appreciation to Alex Ross’ work, the general public will be taking note that comics are capable of more than they realized. For a long time, Ross has represented the best of the medium with his ambitious take on the Marvel and DC universes. Fans, aspiring artists, and art appreciators can visit “Marvelocity: The Art of Alex Ross” until March 6 to see the illustrator’s paintings in person.
