Every Fast & Furious Movie Ranked By Fastness & Furiousness

From its humble beginnings as a Point Break rip-off to its current status as one of the most popular Hollywood blockbuster franchises ever made, the Fast & Furious franchise has come a long way. Along its journey, the Fast franchise has shifted through various degrees of fastness and furiousness.

Since Dom Toretto and his crew dragged a vault through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, the franchise has been marked by its playful one-upmanship, with each movie offering up gargantuan set pieces to rival the scale of the gargantuan set pieces from the previous movies. So, we’ve ranked all the Fast & Furious movies by fastness and furiousness.

9 The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift

Since Dom Toretto and Brian O’Conner are nowhere to be seen and their replacements have no charisma, Tokyo Drift is a pretty disappointing display. This was back when the franchise was just about street racing. It was before the Fast movies were filled with helicopters and trains and submarines.

It’s a pretty exciting actioner, but not compared to the explosive movies that followed it. And it also screwed up the timeline in a big way, making most of the subsequent movies technically prequels.

8 Fast & Furious

When Vin Diesel returned to the Fast & Furious series, he made it a wildly popular franchise whose installments are more hotly anticipated than Bond and X-Men movies. But it took a couple of movies to get there.

Diesel’s return to the franchise wasn’t immediately successful, as the fourth movie can attest to. The movie has some dazzling car chases, but on the whole, the transition from street-racing stories to action-driven fare took some trial-and-error.

7 2 Fast 2 Furious

Vin Diesel opted not to return for the first sequel to The Fast and the Furious, which seriously limited 2 Fast 2 Furious’ capacity for fastness and furiousness.

But Paul Walker is still in fighting form as Brian O’Conner, and 2 Fast 2 Furious brought the introduction of fan-favorite duo Tej and Roman, so it’s not all bad.

6 The Fast And The Furious

Every movie in the Fast & Furious franchise has strived to top the previous entry, so one might think that the first movie, The Fast and the Furious, is the least fast and furious. But as the movie that set the tone for the whole franchise, it holds up surprisingly well on the fastness/furiousness scale.

The plot is a pretty obvious rehash of Point Break, with surfing switched out for street racing, but the movie’s visceral depictions of street races and passion for its characters make it work.

5 Furious 7

Paul Walker’s tragic passing in the middle of shooting Furious 7 enforced a lot of script changes that turned the movie into a heartfelt tribute to the cast’s fallen co-star. This meant that it wasn’t particularly fast or furious; the emotional content elevated it from that.

But there was plenty of mind-boggling action, like Brian running up the side of a bus as it slides off the edge of a cliff and jumping onto Dom’s car as he swerves past.

4 Fast Five

The first truly great installment in the Fast & Furious franchise, Fast Five took Dom Toretto and the gang to Rio de Janeiro for a daring heist. The movie has a ton of great set pieces, from the opening train robbery to the foot chase across the rooftops of favelas.

The introduction of Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs character brought a brutal fight with Toretto and a seriously intense shootout to the table. Plus, the climactic dragging of the vault through the streets of Rio made for a delightfully ludicrous finale.

3 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Thanks to Idris Elba’s villainous Brixton, Hobbs & Shaw is the first Fast & Furious movie to feature superhuman abilities (outside the usual suspension of disbelief, that is). Hobbs goes home to Samoa and amasses a personal army for the final battle, and Hobbs and Shaw arm themselves with an axe and a chainsaw, respectively.

As a spin-off featuring only two of the franchise’s lead characters, Hobbs & Shaw couldn’t possibly be as large-scale or spectacular as its mainline cousins, but it was still plenty fast and plenty furious.

2 The Fate Of The Furious

The fury is palpable in The Fate of the Furious, as Dom Toretto does the unthinkable and turns his back on his family to work with cyberterrorist Cipher. It’s later revealed that Toretto is reluctantly working for Cipher to ensure the protection of an illegitimate son he didn’t know he had.

Following Furious 7’s contemplative farewell to Paul Walker, F8 pushed the boat out in terms of explosive action, with a submarine chasing a convoy across an icy plain and Dwayne Johnson redirecting a missile with his bare hands.

1 Fast & Furious 6

From an eye-popping street race through London introduced by Rita Ora to an actual tank tearing through a bustling highway, the sixth installment in the mainline Fast & Furious franchise was extremely fast and extremely furious. The crème de la crème is the climactic chase on the world’s longest runway; it’s been calculated that the plane travels 26 miles throughout the scene.

The post-credits stinger incited a lot of fury, as Deckard Shaw’s supposed murder of Han got Fast fans’ blood boiling hotter than Dwayne Johnson’s when he has to shoot a scene with Vin Diesel.
