Elden Ring Starting Classes Guide (Stats Equipment & Playstyles)

Elden Ring, the upcoming Fromsoftware game, aims to give players an open-world take on the Dark Souls formula. Having recently shown a considerable amount of gameplay in their Network Test, a lot of information regarding the anticipated game has since been revealed. Five pre-set classes are available during this test, all presenting different playstyles.

Many will find the stats for characters in Elden Ring very similar to the ones from the Fromsoft’s Dark Souls series, with only two being renamed. Mind roughly represents Attunement, and leveling it up allows for players to cast more spells between rests. Arcane works similar to Luck but also affects some Sorceries and Incantations, the latter being similar to Miracles in the Dark Souls series.

Comparably to previous Fromsoft Souls games, classes in Elden Ring mostly define the equipment and stats a character starts with. Players wanting a particular playstyle can freely adapt their character through the course of the game. Elden Ring also gives players the power to change a weapon’s scaling stat with the use of Ashes of War, allowing for more versatility in builds.

The Five Starting Classes in Elden Ring

The Warrior is the only class currently in Elden Ring that provides dual-wield gameplay from the beginning of the game. It is the only class to start with two weapons and pressing L1 will allow players to attack with both at the same time. However, the Warrior is very dodge-dependant as it has no way to block damage. Since Warriors start with the highest Dexterity, they are also good candidates for players wishing to build an archer. Overall, this class is very offensive and rewards an aggressive playstyle.

The Bloody Wolf is the highest Strength class and starts players off with Heavy Armor and a two-handed Bastard Greatsword. The high Strength allows for a higher Equip Load, giving characters good protection while allowing for decent rolls. As players level up their Strength, the Bloody Wolf will continue to increase in both damage and defense, as it will allow it to equip heavier loads with fewer consequences.

The Enchanted Knight is the only class in Elden Ring that starts with Sorceries. In terms of stats, this class begins with a high Strength and Intelligence score, which allows it to equip heavier armor and weapons without too many penalties. The Enchanted Knight also starts the game with the best currently available Shield, making them very strong defensively while also allowing for an effective offensive playstyle through the use of sorceries.

The Prophet begins with the highest Faith stat and is the main user of Incantations. This class also sports the highest Mind stat, which allows players to cast the most Spells and Skills before running out of Focus Points. The Prophet begins the game with Beast Claw, one of the most powerful spells in the Network Test. However, this class starts with arguably the worst equipment and tends to be very weak in melee due to the lack of weapons and Ashes that scale with Faith.

The Champion is the only other class to start the game with the ability to cast Incantations but starts with much less Mind than the Prophet. This class can only get Beast Claw at the end of the demo but starts the game with Dragonfire, a very strong and cool-looking ability that can be channeled as a flamethrower. The main physical stat of the Champion is Strength which scales nicely with the Battleaxe it starts with. Players that wish to make a Faith character might consider the Champion over the Prophet in Elden Ring’s Network Test, as the former starts with a Sacred Seal (medium to cast incantations) that scales better with Faith.
