Eternals How Powerful Are The MCUs Deviants Compared To Thanos

The final Eternals trailer gave a first look at the MCU’s Deviants, begging the question of how powerful they are compared to Thanos. The 26th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Eternals is based on characters by legendary Marvel Comics writer Jack Kirby and will follow a group of ancient immortals who have lived, concealed from humankind, on Earth for thousands of years. The Eternals will be forced to reveal themselves to protect Earth from the Deviants – their sworn enemies in the Marvel Comics canon.

While the Eternals are beautiful in contrast to the hideous physical mutations of the Eternals villains, the Deviants, both are similar in power level and near-immortal as a result. The Eternals and the Deviants are historically woven from the same thread, being created by the Celestials in opposition to each other following their experimentation with human DNA. Eternals will certainly delve into these cosmic origins further based on the final trailer and may also shed more light on Thanos’ MCU lineage as a result.

Although MCU details about the Deviants remain scarce, they are not anywhere near as powerful as Thanos. Not only does Thanos thematically possess the abilities of both Eternals and Deviants, but his Titan physiology further amplifies these powers. Thanos is also unconstrained by a singular physical realm, capable of time travel and movement through alternate universes, supplementally highlighting his superiority to the Deviants.

In Marvel Comics, Thanos is a Titanian Eternal born with the Deviant syndrome, which explains his purple skin and colossal appearance. This dual genealogy allows Thanos to boast superhuman abilities associated with the Eternals, such as super strength and unrivaled prescience while retaining powerful Deviant qualities like regeneration and perfect vigor. In contrast, the Deviants in Marvel Comics are often cursed with mutations that are a hindrance rather than a blessing. Some Deviants are referred to as “Mutates” due to their hideous, bestial deformities. While still an intellectually superior race capable of advanced genetic engineering, the Deviants in Marvel Comics are said to primarily hold inferior powers to the Eternals, placing Thanos at least two rungs above them in the cosmic pecking order.

Despite his eventual defeat in Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, Thanos remains a singular intellect, with his crowning achievement being the collection of the Infinity Stones. Thanos was forced to move through alternate universes, planes, and time periods to fulfill his quest, such as interacting with the Red Skull on Vormir. In contrast, the MCU Deviants are largely constrained to the sunken city of Lemuria, as shown in the final Eternals trailer when a Deviant rises from the sea to attack Richard Madden’s Ikaris. While some Marvel Comics Deviants have been shown to develop time travel technology, there is nothing to suggest they will do so in the immediate MCU, again placing Thanos in a superior position power-wise. Time will tell whether the MCU’s Deviants (or Eternals) are elevated to a power class similar to Thanos, but as things stand, it is currently a moot contest. Comparatively, Thanos is to a Deviant as X-Men are to humans, and therefore the Mad Titan remains far ahead of the Eternals’ Deviants as a result.
