Eternals Opening Night Box Office Surpasses ShangChi

Eternals’ opening night box office surpasses another Marvel Studios Phase 4 production Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Directed by Oscar-winning director ChloĆ© Zhao, Eternals is the third Marvel Cinematic Universe film to hit theaters in 2021. The movie was originally meant to debut in late 2020 until COVID-19 forced Marvel to delay it multiple times before landing on a November 2021 release date. Eternals stars characters most people aren’t familiar with, but it features a great cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Gemma Chan.

The lead-up to Eternals’ long-awaited release has seen expectations for the movie greatly fluctuate. Zhao’s ambitious film originally received favorable responses following its world premiere, but Eternals’ mixed reviews overall make it one of the MCU’s more polarizing films early on. This has raised more questions about how well the sci-fi film featuring no known MCU characters will perform at the box office. Opening weekend projections for Eternals have ranged from $75 million to surpassing $100M, especially after it became Fandango’s second-highest preselling movie of 2021. Now that the movie is out in theaters, the early box office results are surfacing.

According to THR, Eternals made $9.5M in opening night previews at the domestic box office. Eternals’ performance is greater than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which had an opening night of $8.8M back in September. This gives Marvel’s latest movie the third-highest opening night of 2021 with only Black Widow and Venom: Let There Be Carnage earning more. Eternals currently has a worldwide box office total of nearly $30M thanks to its international launch.

Eternals’ opening night box office performance puts it right in line to hit Disney’s projections for a $75M opening weekend. Shang-Chi opened to $75.4M in September over the three-day window, even though the full Labor Day weekend figure was a record $94.7M. Now that Eternals has opened slightly higher than Shang-Chi, this start and its strong presales should allow that opening weekend projection to be hit. However, the middling reviews it has received could negatively impact Eternals’ box office performance overall.

It will certainly be intriguing to see how well audiences respond to Marvel Studios’ latest Phase 4 film. The divisive critical response could either take away business from Eternals or galvanize the MCU’s giant and loyal fanbase to go out of their way to see the movie a few times during the opening weekend. So far, general audiences seem to be enjoying the movie much more than critics, as it has a high audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If the word of mouth on Eternals picks up steam, then the movie could still find financial success even without the MCU’s usual strong critical support.
