It’s called Desperate Housewives for a reason! The show centers around the women of Wisteria Lane, and their triumphs and struggles are the focus of the series, of which the former are few and the latter are many.
One of the many problems these women have on their serving platters is their husbands, whose egregious behaviors range from attempted murder to incessant whining. While most of the men the housewives find love with don’t last, some are kinder and less problematic.
11 Tom Scavo
The women of Wisteria Lane marry men who are adulterous, bullying, dishonest, manipulative, and outright cruel. However, we would literally rather marry any single one of them rather than Tom Scavo. When he meets Lynette, they’re both competitive up-and-comers in the advertising business. Despite knowing Lynette’s passion for her career, he does all he can to force her into a more traditional role of housewife and mother, something she neither wants nor enjoys.
When Lynette goes back to work, Tom insists on her hiring him, but is somehow shocked to find that having his wife as his boss means that he will sometimes have to do what she says. He’s furious to hear that Lynette isn’t doing cartwheels about the prospect of quitting her job and putting their life savings into a pizza restaurant, and uses his position as the boss to bully her every chance he gets. Lynette is by no means perfect, but Tom’s victim routine gets really, really old.
10 Dave Williams
Dave Williams lost his daughter and first wife to the car accident that Mike and Susan Delfino were involved in. This led to a psychotic break and a stint in a mental hospital. Upon his release, he met Edie Britt.
When he learned that she was from Wisteria Lane, the location of the people he viewed as responsible for killing his family, he struck up a romance with her that resulted in marriage and the two moving back to the Lane. Though their entire relationship was built on a lie, Dave and Edie seemed to get along well enough. Until he strangled her and she died fleeing from him, that is.
9 Carl Mayer
One of the first things we learn about Susan in the first episode of the show is that she has spent recent months picking up the pieces of her nasty divorce from her ex-husband, Carl. She discovers that he is having an affair with his secretary and confronts him, so he walks out on her.
She later begins to realize that Carl was unfaithful for much of their time together, which makes sense given how thoughtless and uncaring he is with women in general. Susan does eventually remarry Carl, but the union is brief and purely for the purpose of getting the healthcare that will allow her to get life-saving surgery.
8 Rex Van De Camp
Bree Van De Camp is beautiful, thoughtful, and can keep a house better than anyone else on the lane (besides maybe her second husband, Orson). So that’s why it’s so ridiculous when Rex declares his distaste for everything about his wife. The two go through a separation but try to work things through until Bree discovers that Rex has been having an affair with a prostitute.
He has a heart attack that almost kills him, which, combined with Bree seeming to have had enough of him, makes him decide to try to be a better husband. He starts helping Bree with parenting their unruly children and it seems as though she may be willing to forgive him before he dies from a second heart attack.
7 Paul Young
Paul Young really seemed to love his first wife, Mary Alice (the show’s narrator whose suicide kicks off the mystery in season one). He loved her enough to help her cover up a murder, and he only gets creepier from there.
He leaves the Lane after being framed for another murder and comes back for revenge when he is released. He has a new wife, Beth, who he constantly berates for not having sex with him. When he finds out she’s the daughter of the woman who framed him, he throws her out, leading her to kill herself as well.
6 Victor Lang
Gaby was with Victor for a relatively short time but was never able to get over Carlos. Victor loved Gaby in his own way but didn’t really respect her.
His obsession with his political career got in the way of his relationship with Gaby, who often felt hurt and neglected by his habit of not putting her first. He died after being impaled by a fence post, something she didn’t seem to take too long to get over.
5 Adam Mayfair
When Adam and Katherine moved onto the lane, he seemed pretty normal compared to the other husbands. And, as it turned out, though his wife has many secrets, he wasn’t privy to many.
His only transgression was an affair that he lied to Katherine about, which is pretty tame for this show. He leaves Katherine when he finds out her big crazy secret but comes back one last time in the season four finale to save her life when her first husband holds her hostage and plans to kill her.
4 Nick Bolen
The Bolens were introduced as season six’s shady characters. Nick seemed shady and possibly aggressive. He was hiding something, but his secret was that he wasn’t really the father of he and Angie’s son, Danny. Angie had Danny with her violent ex-boyfriend (who also happened to be a terrorist), and Nick went on the run with Angie and her son after falling in love with her.
He protected them and didn’t care that Danny wasn’t biologically his. He did have an affair with Julie Mayer, but Angie seemed to get over that fairly quickly.
3 Carlos Solis
Carlos Solis is a complicated guy. When we first meet him it’s from the point of view of a very dissatisfied Gaby, who he treats like a trophy wife. He loves her, but he doesn’t respect her. He desperately wants children, something Gaby is very much against, so he tampers with her birth control without her knowledge in order to force her into a pregnancy she doesn’t want.
After reading that, it may be odd that he’s so far up the list. Gaby and Carlos are married twice, and both are frequently morally questionable, but he’s quite different from his first marriage to his second. Their first union ends when he has an affair with the woman carrying their child. They find their way back to one another after Carlos realizes what he’s lost. He begins to put Gaby first and even saves her from her sexually abusive stepfather in season eight.
2 Orson Hodge
Orson Hodge is perfectly suited to Bree. They both love cleaning and appreciate the value of keeping up appearances and customs. Unlike her previous husband, Orson loves Bree and understands her as she is, appreciating the little quirks that Rex detested so much. He saves her life from his murderous mother and supports Bree in her slightly insane plan for hiding Danielle’s pregnancy, adopting the child as his own.
When Bree finds out that Orson was the one who hit Mike with his car, Bree demands that he turn himself in. Orson does so in order to keep his marriage intact, and when he gets out Bree has started a highly successful business. Their marriage goes through many problems and the two ultimately decide to separate, something that later drives Orson to some pretty insane extremes, but when things were good with these two, they were pretty good.
1 Mike Delfino
Mike Delfino is perhaps the only husband that could accurately be described as “unproblematic”- and he did time in prison for manslaughter. Mike is a guy who is always there for the people he loves and is considered a faithful protector of the lane and those who live there. He and Susan have many ups and downs in their relationship, but it’s clear that they love each other even when they’re apart.
They get married and Mike allows Susan to help him through his addiction, becoming a clean and sober father for his son. The two divorce and remarry before running into money troubles that stem from Mike’s generosity. Things are solid once again between Mike and Susan until he’s shot in season eight, in what is perhaps the saddest death on the show.
