Godzilla: King of the Monsters suggests that Ghidorah wasn’t the only dragon in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. In fact, there could actually be six of them in shared universe. At the beginning of King of the Monsters, 17 Titans were confirmed to exist in the MonsterVerse. Not all were shown, but their names were featured on a monitor screen during the movie.

Five of the Titans – Godzilla, Rodan, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and King Kong – are all major players in the MonsterVerse and characters with long histories in giant monster movies. The rest, however, are original to the MonsterVerse. They were all being monitored in secure Monarch outposts spread out across all seven continents, but were unleashed on the world when they were woken up by Ghidorah’s call. The Titans went to answer Ghidorah’s summons and began to do his bidding. Four of them appeared King of the Monsters, including Scylla, Behemoth, Methuselah, and a third M.U.T.O.

The four of them were present when Godzilla killed Ghidorah and took his place as the new King of the Monsters. After Rodan bowed in respect to the new alpha, the four Titans followed suit. It should be noted, though, that Rodan, Scylla, Behemoth, Methuselah, and the third M.U.T.O. aren’t Godzilla’s only new minions. The other Titans awakened by Godzilla are presumably under his control as well; they just weren’t shown onscreen. Though audiences never get to see what these mysterious Titans look like, their mythological connections provide useful clues in figuring out what these monsters are. Looking at their names and what they represent in various cultures, it seems that a large chunk of the Titans in the MonsterVerse are dragons. Here’s all of them.

King Ghidorah

King Ghidorah is the only dragon that’s appeared in the flesh in the MonsterVerse, and the only Titan audiences know for a fact is a dragon. The golden, three-headed monster is Godzilla’s ancient rival, which means that King of the Monsters wasn’t their first meeting. Godzilla is actually the reason why Ghidorah was found frozen in the ice in the first place, as Godzilla defeated Ghidorah centuries ago.

What’s perhaps most interesting about Ghidorah is that the Titan isn’t from Earth. Like his Toho counterpart, Ghidorah is an alien invader from a distant planet. His alien origins are why the eco-terrorists’ plan to gradually wake up the Titans backfired. Ghidorah, being an outsider who’s not part of the natural order, didn’t behave the way they expected and attempted to terraform the planet.

Ghidorah is now dead, thanks to Godzilla, but a return for the iconic villain isn’t impossible. The Ghidorah head in the Godzilla: King of the Monsters post-credits scene could have set up Ghidorah’s resurrection. Through advanced technology, he could become Mecha-King Ghidorah and team up with Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Amhuluk

One of the Titans missing from Godzilla: King of the Monsters is Amhuluk, a creature who was living beneath the Manpupuner rock formations in Russia. Amhuluk’s name connects him to a monster from the mythology of the Kalayupa tribes, a Native American people based in northern Oregon. To them, Amhuluk was a powerful, four-legged, spotted sea serpent who lived near a lake and generally drowned or impaled anyone he saw. He was believed to be a malevolent creature who took pleasure from killing. It could be that this creature traveled from Oregon to Russia at some point in his life and is connected to the dragons from Slavic mythology. After all, the Kalayupa’s description of Amhuluk does fit the criteria for the Western definition of a dragon.

Leviathan

Titanus Leviathan lived in Loch Ness, Scotland. Though his location alone is a dead giveaway of his true identity, the Godzilla: King of the Monsters novelization makes it even clearer by confirming that he travels through the water. Apparently, he uses the Hollow Earth tunnels to travel to and from Loch Ness and the oceans. Sightings of this creature is what inspired the folklore legend of the Loch Ness Monster, who is believed to be a long-necked dinosaur of some sort.

The story of the Loch Ness Monster only goes back to 1933, but the name “Leviathan” is rooted in something much older: the Bible. The Bible’s Leviathan is a giant sea serpent mentioned in the Old Testament. The monster has been referenced in other religious texts as well, and is sometimes described as a dragon who lives underwater. So while Ghidorah was a dragon capable of roaming the skies, Leviathan could be the king of the seas.

Typhon

In King of the Monsters, the Titan known as Typhon was located at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. If his reputation in Greek mythology is any indication, Typhon could be one of the most powerful Titans in the MonsterVerse. In the old Greek stories, Typhon was a wicked beast who engaged Zeus in an epic battle that ended with Typhon being killed by Zeus’ thunderbolts and buried under a volcano.

There are different interpretations of Typhon in Greek mythology, including that of a winged, fire-breathing monster. That being said, Typhon is consistently depicted as a serpent-like creature with a hundred heads. This is one element of his appearance that most legends seem to agree on. If it’s hard to believe that a Titan could share this description, Ghidorah is proof that multi-headed creatures in the MonsterVerse are possible. The MonsterVerse’s Typhon could even be related to Ghidorah in some way, as it’s true that the two do indeed sound similar.

Tiamat

King of the Monsters makes a direct reference to a Titan living in Stone Mountain, Georgia. This Titan is Tiamat, a creature with its roots in Akkadian mythology. Tiamat was worshiped by the ancient Babylonians as a goddess of the ocean who helped create the planet. At some point, Tiamat became associated with dragons and people began describing her as a sea serpent. It’s possible that Monarch named her “Tiamat” either for being a female water dragon, or just because she originally dwelled in the ocean. This question may not be answered until Tiamat makes an official appearance in the MonsterVerse.

Yamata no Orochi

Monarch Outpost 91 in Mount Fuji, Japan, contained Yamata no Orochi. Yamata no Orochi is a bit less mysterious than most of the missing Titans from King of the Monsters, considering that the legends clearly distinguish it as a dragon. In Japanese mythology, Yamata no Orochi is a fearsome dragon with eight heads and eight tails, and is actually what inspired King Ghidorah himself. Toho created their own version of the beast and named him “Orochi”. He first appeared in the 1959 film, The Birth of Japan, and returned for two more movies. However, he never fought Godzilla. Perhaps the MonsterVerse’s Yamata no Orochi will get a chance to cross paths with the King of the Monsters in the near future.
