NBC officially launched its own streaming service in July 2020, though Peacock was available exclusively to Xfinity subscribers starting in April 2020.

In July, however, Peacock launched for anyone to subscribe to for a fee and access a lengthy list of archived NBC series, including both legacy ones that have ended, like Two and a Half Men, and back libraries and current episodes of popular ones still on the air, like Saturday Night Live. The service also offers movies, like The Matrix films.

But alongside this diverse library of legacy content, Peacock also includes original and exclusive series. How do they hold up, so far?

11 The At-Home Variety Show – No Score Yet

This short-form series is dubbed a reality TV/talk show and stars Seth MacFarlane who is joined by other celebrities who aim to put on an entertaining show. The intent is to provide much-needed laughs and distractions for communities and individuals in need.

There are 20 short episodes, each under 10 minutes, featuring celebrities like Tony Shalhoub, Ed Helms, and Amy Poehler. But it seems too soon for any score to have been tabulated and viewers haven’t yet chimed in. Thus, it ranks last.

10 Hitmen – 4.8

This comedy and crime series, originally airing in Sky One in the U.K., is about two best friends who are seemingly average middle-aged women but are actually in business together in a unique and unexpected vocation: they are contract killers.

It’s a fun series that defies conventions, but it seems viewers aren’t buying the concept as the series is more loathed than liked.

9 Intelligence – 6.0

There were high hopes for this sitcom given the star power provided by David Schwimmer. He has proven with projects like American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson and his recurring role on Will & Grace that he is able to shake the Ross from Friends typecast. But despite his talent as an actor, it still hasn’t saved this show.

The series is about an arrogant American NSA agent who is sent to oversee the cyber-crimes unit in the U.K.’s Government Communication Headquarters. But he ends up causing more trouble than good for them, trying to force them to do things “the American way.” It isn’t as funny as viewers might have hoped. Nonetheless, Sky Television has already commissioned a second season.

8 Brave New World – 7.1

Another series that Peacock was really banking on, this drama/sci-fi based on the Aldous Huxley novel and concept has only gotten a lukewarm response. Set in a dystopian (though presumed utopian) future, Brave New World features a new world that is rid of silly things that got in the way, like privacy and intimacy.

To make the story more modern, there’s an artificial intelligence (AI) system that connects people to one another via wireless network. On the one side, the series is being praised for the gorgeous visuals but on the other, it has been criticized for lacking the kind of depth that existed in the book.

7 Lost Speedways – 7.1

Dale Earnhardt Jr. takes viewers on a ride around abandoned racetracks across the U.S. in this documentary series that includes eight episodes, each under half an hour, in the first season.

Produced by Peacock, Earnhardt is joined by Matthew Dillner as they not only travel to the racetracks but also recall the stories of these forgotten speedways. Of the few reviews so far, most are from younger males who seem to favor the series while older men and women aren’t feeling it as much.

6 Where’s Waldo – 7.1

Originally debuting on Universal Kids in 2019, this animated children’s show moved to Peacock for its second season. Based on the North American version of Michael Handford’s Where’s Wally? books, Where’s Waldo? combines a fun and engaging show with educational elements.

There are celebrity guest actors, including Bobby Moynihan, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Oscar Nunez, Hannah Simone, and others that will please parents, too. Ratings are pretty solid but still don’t crack the top five in terms of “new” shows.

5 Curious George – 7.2

This is technically not a new show: this animated series has been airing in Canada on PBS Kids since 2006, ending in 2009 before being picked up again in 2018, after which it has been airing ever since. Peacock picked it up for the 13th season, though it will continue to air on PBS in October 2020 as well.

The show consists of a series of live-action shorts about the curious and cute monkey and his owner The Man with the Yellow Hat, incorporating educational elements about math and science through experiments.

4 A.P. Bio – 7.3

Another series that isn’t technically new, Peacock picked up this show for a third season after NBC cancelled A.P. Bio. Season three is scheduled to premiere on September 3, 2020. But for now, subscribers can watch the first two seasons from 2018 and 2019, respectively.

A.P. Bio is about a disgraced Harvard philosophy professor who, after losing out on the job of his dreams to a rival, moves back to Ohio to teach advanced placement biology. But instead of teaching the super smart students anything about biology, he commissions the help of the class to get revenge. Despite gearing up for a third season, however, critics have called it everything from “unfunny” to “deeply unpleasant.”

3 Cleopatra in Space – 7.6

So far, the best reviewed animated series for Peacock also happens to be the third-highest ranked new series overall. This one, which was the first Dreamworks Animation series to be released on a streaming service other than Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, is about the historical figure in her teenage years, dealing with everyday teenage issues.

She gets transported 30,000 years into her future on a planet with an Egyptian theme that is ruled by cats and must work to save the galaxy. The show has been getting pretty good reviews and is ideal for kids aged 7 and up.

2 Five Bedrooms – 7.7

Hailing from Australia, Five Bedrooms originally launched on Network 10 but was picked up for the U.S. by Peacock. The eight-part series, which has been renewed for a second season, is about five very different people who forge a strange bond with one another after being seated together at the singles table for a wedding.

They spend the night drinking and, on a whim, decide to buy a five-bedroom house together. Naturally, nothing works out as planned. It is currently the second highest rated “new” series on Peacock.

1 The Capture – 7.8

Another import from another country, this British mystery crime-drama series originally premiered on BBC One in late 2019 and got rave reviews. Peacock made a good decision by picking it up as the show is its highest-rated new series to date.

The conspiracy thriller is about a United Kingdom Special Forces corporal who is on a mission to clear his name after he is charged of a terrible crime, adamant in his innocence despite CCTV footage that “proves” he did it. It’s a cat and mouse chase between he and the detective inspector who was assigned to arrest and charge him.
