While Emmy-winner Alec Baldwin is recently best known for playing Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, that’s far from his only historical character. Baldwin of course starred as lead Liz Lemon’s boss Jack Donaghy on the long-running NBC sitcom 30 Rock, having transitioned over to TV stardom after spending much of the 1990s as a Hollywood leading man. In movies, Baldwin played key roles in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, profanity-laced David Mamet-penned drama Glengarry Glen Ross, and even Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October.

Of course, those are all memorable fictional characters Baldwin has played over the course of his long career. He’s also played way more real-life people, or at least dramatized versions of them, in movies and on TV than many fans might be aware of. Baldwin’s portrayal of former president Trump will go down in SNL history, proving to be must see TV on many occasions, but Baldwin has also played gangsters, televangelists, inventors, and even other U.S. commanders-in-chief.

While Baldwin himself is quite a character, and is perhaps just as well-known nowadays for his tumultuous personal life as his work onscreen, there’s no denying that he’s had a career most actors can only dream of. Here’s the full rundown of all the times the three-time Emmy Award recipient has made a living playing a real person.

President Donald Trump (Saturday Night Live)

One of the most famous political impressions in the history of Saturday Night Live, which covers a lot of ground, Alec Baldwin began playing Donald Trump when he was still a candidate in 2016. Following his victory, Baldwin continued to appear as Trump off and on throughout his term as U.S. President, but seems to have left the role behind following Trump’s loss to Joe Biden in 2020.

John DeLorean (Framing John DeLorean)

A unique combination of documentary and biopic, 2019’s Framing John DeLorean takes a look at the turbulent life and career of the titular automaker, best known for creating the car Back to the Future’s Doc and Marty would travel through time in. Well, that and being brought up on trial for an alleged attempted drug deal later on. Baldwin plays DeLorean in scenes that re-enact some of the important moments discussed.

Jimmy Swaggart (Great Balls of Fire)

The 1989 film Great Balls of Fire is a biopic of singer and piano player Jerry Lee Lewis, who looked to be the next big thing in rock and roll before his scandalous, yet oddly legal marriage to his 13-year-old cousin walloped his career. Lewis is played by Dennis Quaid, while Baldwin plays Jimmy Swaggart, another cousin of Lewis who would go on to become a famous televangelist, only to be brought down by his own scandal, at least temporarily.

Bobby DeLaughter (Ghosts of Mississippi)

Directed by Rob Reiner, 1996’s Ghosts of Mississippi is based on the real-life 1994 trial of Byron De La Beckwith, an avowed white supremacist and card-carrying member of the KKK, played by James Woods. Beckwith stood accused of murdering Black civil rights activist Medgar Evers in 1963, and had been tried twice previously, only for the jury to end deadlocked. Baldwin played Bobby DeLaughter, an assistant district attorney who agreed to take on the case on behalf of Megar’s wife Myrlie, played by Whoopi Goldberg.

James Doolittle (Pearl Harbor)

2001’s Pearl Harbor was director Michael Bay’s romanticized look at the Japanese attack on a Navy base that led to the U.S. formally entering World War II. Baldwin played Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, who would lead the Doolittle Raid, a retaliatory air attack by the U.S. on Japan. Regarded as a hero, Doolittle would be promoted to lieutenant general, and later full general.

Juan Trippe (The Aviator)

2004’s The Aviator, Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed biopic about the life of eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, saw the titular magnate played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Baldwin played the supporting role of Juan Trippe, founder of Pan Am Airlines, and all-around pioneer in the field of aviation. Trippe ended up a business rival to Hughes after he purchased the now-defunct Trans World Airlines.

Robert Maheu (Rules Don’t Apply)

12 years after The Aviator, Baldwin appeared in 2016’s Rules Don’t Apply, another film involving Howard Hughes, albeit one much less reality-based. Rules Don’t Apply was written, directed, produced by and starred Warren Beatty, who played Hughes. Baldwin played Robert Maheu, a private detective and former FBI officer who worked for Hughes for decades, albeit while never meeting face-to-face.

William B. Travis (The Alamo: Thirteen Days to Glory)

The Alamo: 13 Days to Glory is a 1987 blast from TV’s past, a miniseries that was later edited to feature-length. As one might imagine, it’s about the famous Battle of the Alamo. Baldwin played William B. Travis, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Texas Army who was killed in the battle, waged as part of the Texas Revolution. This was an important early role for Baldwin, who was able to transition to movie leading man not long after.

Robert H. Jackson (Nuremberg)

Nuremberg was another TV miniseries, this one aired in 2000 and based on the book Nuremberg: Infamy on Trial by Joseph E. Persico. It’s another case of a self-explanatory title, as it covers the post-World War II Nuremberg trials. Baldwin leads a cast full of recognizable faces as Robert H. Jackson, a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court who also served as chief prosecutor for the U.S. in the trials.

Robert McNamara (Path to War)

Path to War was a 2002 HBO made-for-cable movie, and the final film of legendary director John Frankenheimer, who passed away mere weeks after its premiere. Path to War examines the Vietnam War from the perspective of President Lyndon Johnson and his cabinet. Baldwin played Robert McNamara, who served as U.S. Secretary of Defense under both Johnson and his predecessor John F. Kennedy.

Theodore Roosevelt (American Experience)

Baldwin played U.S. president Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt on an episode of PBS’ American Experience documentary series titled “Into the Amazon,” which aired in 2018. Baldwin voiced Roosevelt, but didn’t play him onscreen, in this chronicling of a real-life rainforest journey taken by the notably rugged Roosevelt and Brazilian explorer Candido Rondon.

George Tenet (The Looming Tower)

The Looming Tower aired as a limited series on Hulu in 2018, and looks at the events that led to the intelligence failures surrounding the Al-Qaeda terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Alec Baldwin played the recurring role of George Tenet, who was then serving as CIA director for U.S. president George W. Bush. Tenet left office with multiple controversies surrounding him, including his authorship of the torture techniques used on detainees, and an Inspector General’s report later placed partial blame on Tenet for failing to develop a plan to deal with Al-Qaeda prior to the attacks.
