The characters of Rick and Morty may not seem like the most romantic people, but there have been a number of great relationships on the animated show.

Although the show’s main focus is sci-fi-themed adventures, Rick and Morty has episodes about deep issues, like what it means to go through life, fall in love, and experience heartbreak.

Many of the characters on Rick and Morty have been through the trials and tribulations of finding love — there was even an entire app developed by Jerry and Glootie for finding soulmates. Through the show’s 50 episodes, fans have seen quite a few couples come and go. Some have been great matchups, but others… not so much.

15 Morty And Jacqueline

Morty and Jacqueline’s relationship wasn’t quite an official one on the show, as Morty was his Untoxic version and their pairing is wildly illegal because of their age difference, but the two did share an apartment together for an unstated amount of time.

Morty got along well with her and was supportive of her career, but he also wasn’t himself, making this a disturbing pairing. He quickly broke up with Jacqueline upon being merged with his Toxic half.

14 Rick And Daphne

In a chaos-filled Rick and Morty B-story, Rick and Summer went on a bender to different planets about to explode. They promised to have a week free of commitments, but Rick’s tendency to get caught up in the moment often leads him to overly passionate, fast relationships. That’s exactly what happened when he met Daphne, an alien from one of the exploding planets.

This relationship started off with one person having genuine feelings and the other one simply not wanting to die. As far as honesty and compatibility go, it was doomed from the start.

13 Jerry And Kiara

It makes no sense that Jerry rushed into a relationship through an alien dating site and met Kiara, a huntress Krootabulan — and that they became soul-bonded after barely knowing each other.

The two seemingly got along well enough, but Jerry’s problematic issues with her appearance and his willingness to blame his kids for breaking up with her speak to the validity of their connection. At the heart of it, they were both rebounds for each other.

12 Rick And Gaia

It’s perfectly on-brand for Rick to had been in a relationship with a literal planet. When she contacted him that she was having children, he traveled to help her and be a present father to the half-planet babies — mostly because of Beth’s urging. But that’s not until after Rick created an entire system to categorize and take care of the offspring,

Unfortunately, Rick found out that the kids weren’t his after all, but another immortal being’s. Gaia lying to Rick and then asking him to leave when the real father came was a low blowl.

11 Rick And Princess Poñeta

Not only did Princess Poñeta risk her safety and the approval of her father to save Rick and Morty from being executed, but when she revealed that she was pregnant, Rick had a much better reaction than with Gaia. Rick and Princess Poñeta also seemed to be on the same wavelength in that they appreciated what they had and the child they created.

When Rick was told that the kids basically come out ready to go off on their own, he and Princess Poñeta parted ways mutually and there were no hard feelings. Even though it wasn’t meant to be, their respect for each other means something.

10 Birdperson And Tammy

Birdperson and Tammy seemed to have a stable and loving relationship after they met at Rick’s house party, and they eventually even got married. However, Tammy revealed herself to be a federation agent and opened fire at their wedding, almost killing BP.

She brought him back as Phoenixperson before she was killed herself when she came back to finish her mission. Although their relationship was built on a lie, Birdperson still remembered her as kind, as Rick observed when he went into BP’s mind. The betrayal, however, cut BP very deeply.

9 Summer and Ethan

Summer and Ethan were featured in “Anatomy Park” as a typical teenage couple, getting mad at each other if one of them didn’t text back. Ethan also trusted Summer enough to reveal some pretty vague but serious-sounding trauma from his childhood.

When they made up, they were all over each other and the two continued to have a rocky on-again, off-again relationship until “The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy,” when Morty altered Ethan’s appearance for the worst after he broke up with Summer and took Tricia Lange on the camping trip they had planned.

8 Morty And Jessica

Morty and Jessica never had a fully formed relationship on the show, but there was an attempt made, and Morty’s longstanding crush on Jessica was substantial enough for it to count. The problem with this pair was that, in Jessica’s own true-to-character words, she was “just an object in another story” and never really had agency.

Several times she expressed interest in Morty, making Rick find him in “Rest and Ricklaxation” and telling him Morty should have asked her out sooner in “Mort Dinner Rick Andre.” But Jessica’s millennia stuck in time ended up coming between them.

7 Summer And Hemorrhage

These two actually made quite a good pair before they moved in together and started to bicker. Rick and Morty has hilarious movie parodies, and In “Rickmancing The Stone,” Summer was pretty taken by the Mad Max-inspired member of the “Death Stalkers.” She and Hemorrhage had a definite spark and some good talks about self-identity.

Summer’s winning combination of a tough exterior and soft interior paired well with Hemorrhage’s metal helmet outer facade and blonde mustache underneath.

6 Jerry And Sleepy Gary

Sleepy Gary, a parasite from the movie and television reference-filled “Total Rickall” episode, was originally paired up with Beth, but his secret romance with Jerry was much more interesting and had more chemistry. On the surface, the two were supposed to be best friends, but after a vacation and a sexually charged conversation about Star Wars filming locations, Jerry and Sleepy Gary start a passionate affair.

The two definitely cared about each other, but Sleepy Gary couldn’t be allowed to live in the house, and his parasite inner self had ulterior motives.

5 Rick And Unity

Rick and Unity seemed like the perfect pairing: a supergenius who loves to have fun, and an entire assimilated population of people. Rick also really loved Unity, as was obvious to fans after a heartbreaking Rick and Morty scene where he contemplated suicide after their breakup.

Although they had genuine passion and love for each other and a great time when they were together, Unity told Rick that they brought out their more toxic and negative traits in each other. Rick’s complete disregard for his grandchildren in favor of focusing on Unity weighed heavily on her and she endeds things, leaving Rick broken.

4 Morty And Planetina

Planetina was Morty’s first real girlfriend, and the two shared a sweet and heartfelt romance, although it was unclear what their age difference was because Planetina is an ageless embodiment of the elements. What started as mutual infatuation turned sour when it became clear that Planetina’s enthusiasm for environmental conservation motivated her to do some unspeakable things to “protect the planet.”

Her emotions easily got out of control and Morty’s conscience couldn’t justify her killing innocent people (although, Morty’s definitely taken an innocent life or two — even in Planetina’s episode). If the two could grow together, they’d be a great team.

3 Beth And Jerry (Post-Divorce)

Beth and Jerry have a rocky and toxic relationship at times, but even in realities where they weren’t together and successful in their own lives, they made their way back to each other.

They’ve gone to therapy and have put a lot of work into their relationship in recent seasons and it shows. There has been more mutual respect than before, and they prioritized their relationship and bond. They’ve even become a “sex positive couple” as they both proclaimed in “Mort Dinner Rick Andre.”

2 Morty And His Girlfriend

In “The Vat Of Acid Episode,” Morty saved his place with the invention that Rick made for him before introducing himself to a brunette. The two seemed instantly compatible and their relationship unfolded over a montage. They texted each other, went on dates, and even a trip together where they survived a plane crash and several days on a snowy mountaintop. It’s the longest and most developed relationship Morty has had on the show.

However, Jerry hit the reset button on the invention, and Morty was sent back to before they met. When he tried to explain what happened, she pepper sprayed him — although, part of her must have remembered their other life, as she appeared tearful when Morty jumped into the fake acid vat.

1 Rick And Birdperson

Although they aren’t canon for the show, Rick’s feelings were alluded to in “Rickternal Friendshine Of The Spotless Mort” and Rick And Morty comic fans know they have a romantic relationship in one reality. Rick cares deeply for Birdperson and the two are an amazing team.

Furthermore, BP and Unity were two of the only people to truly gut Rick with their rejection. Even as simply BP’s friend, Rick went above and beyond for him and craved his attention and friendship. When BP was getting married, Rick was not happy at all. Maybe it was a distaste for marriage… or a twinge of envy.
