Every Song In West Side Story 2021 & What Order Theyre In

Warning: This post contains spoilers for West Side Story.

Every song in 2021’s West Side Story and what order they come in the film. West Side Story, which originally debuted on Broadway in 1957 and was later adapted into a film in 1961, gets an update from director Steven Spielberg and writer Tony Kushner. While the film maintains the same plot and songs, there are marked differences between the 2021 version and its 1960s movie counterpart; that difference includes where the songs come in the soundtrack listing and who sings them.

West Side Story follows Maria (Rachel Zegler) and Tony (Ansel Elgort) as they meet and fall in love with each other following a local dance. Unfortunately, their relationship is deeply affected by the rivalry between the Jets, a mostly Irish-American gang Tony started with Riff (Mike Faist), and the Sharks, a Puerto Rican group led by Maria’s brother Bernardo (David Alvarez). When the Jets won’t leave the Sharks alone, the growing tension mounts and leads to a violent Rumble between them.

The latest version of West Side Story has all of the songs — with music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim — that made the original movie musical and the stage iteration so beloved in the first place, including “Tonight” and the high energy “America.” However, there are a few changes to the songs, be it in the order they appear in the story or in the lyrics themselves. Here is every song in West Side Story, who performs them, and where in the movie they appear.

“La Borinqueña (Sharks Version)” – This song, the Puerto Rican national anthem, is sung by Bernardo and the Sharks at the start of the film after the Jets deface a mural featuring the Puerto Rican flag.

“Jet Song” – This song plays after the introduction of the Jets and following their first heated exchange with the Sharks. It’s sung by Riff, Ice, Diesel, Baby John and the other members of the Jets as they’re walking down the street and after they’ve been given a talking to by Lieutenant Schrank (Corey Stoll).

“Something’s Coming” – Tony sings the song in Valentina’s drug store after telling Riff of his refusal to go to the dance and join the Jets for a Rumble with the Sharks. After being given some hope by Valentina, Tony feels like something good is definitely coming, alluding to his meeting with Maria shortly thereafter.

“Maria” – Tony sings this song after meeting and dancing briefly with Maria behind the bleachers at the gym dance. After she’s called away, he learns her name when Bernardo talks about her with Anita (Ariana DeBose). Tony is smitten and walks away from the dance lovestruck before he starts singing about Maria.

“Balcony Scene (Tonight)” – This is one of the main songs in West Side Story and later gets a reprise. It’s sung as a duet between Maria and Tony after meeting her on the balcony shortly after the dance. They’re enamored with each other and agree to meet for a date later.

“America” – The song is sung by Anita, Bernardo, and members of the Sharks. It comes after Anita hears Bernardo give a stern talking to Maria; Anita has goals for her life and work in New York and the song’s lyrics play out as a push-pull with Bernardo’s ideas of America vs. her own. In this version of “America,” West Side Story combines the 1961 movie’s version with that of the play and places it in the morning after the dance rather than before.

“Gee, Officer Krupke” – Performed by Diesel, Mouthpiece, and a few other members of the Jets, the song comes after Officer Krupke (Brian d’Arcy James) and Lieutenant Schrank discover there’s going to be a Rumble between the Jets and the Sharks. They interrogate the boys and they get frustrated, so they woefully sing about how they’re treated while still at the precinct. In the movie, this song is sung in the streets and isn’t in the first half of the film.

“One Hand, One Heart” – This song is sung by Maria and Tony while they’re on their date and after Tony reveals why he went to jail to begin with. They fantasize being together and getting married while visiting one of Tony’s favorite places in New York.

“Cool” – This song is performed by Tony and Riff following the former’s promise to Maria that he would ensure the Rumble between the Sharks and the Jets was free of weapons. In 2021’s West Side Story, Tony is included in this sequence. In the original film, this song is sung by Ice after Riff’s death at the Rumble as he tells the other Jets to keep, well, cool.

“Tonight (Quintet)” – This song is sung by Tony, Maria, Bernardo, Anita, Riff, and the ensemble as the Jets and Sharks prepare for their Rumble.

“I Feel Pretty” – Maria sings this song following the events of the Rumble — the ramifications of which she doesn’t know yet — and during her night shift cleaning with several of Anita’s friends. This is a stark difference from the 1961 film, which sees Maria singing “I Feel Pretty” much earlier and while working at a bridal shop.

“Somewhere” – This song is sung by Valentina (played by Rita Moreno, who portrayed Anita in the original film) following the Rumble and after she learns of what happened to Riff and Bernardo during the fight. She sings the song inside her drug store. In 1961’s version of West Side Story, “Somewhere” is sung by Tony to Maria after he comes to her in the hours after stabbing Bernardo.

“A Boy Like That/I Have a Love” – This two-in-one song is performed by Anita and Maria after Anita learns of Bernard’s death and walks in on Maria and Tony in bed. Anita is angry with Maria for sleeping with the boy who killed Bernardo while Maria convinces Anita to help them run away together.

“Finale” – This song comes, as the title suggests, at the very end of the film. Tony has been shot and Maria sings a few lines of “Tonight” rather than “Somewhere” (like in the 1961 version of West Side Story) before breaking down into tears and the orchestra carries on playing in the place of her singing as the lyrics.
