F9 Earns $700 Million At Worldwide Box Office

F9 has earned $700 million at the worldwide box office. For over a year now, the film industry has been struggling to cope with shutdowns and other effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. While releases like A Quiet Place Part II, F9, and Black Widow have all broken pandemic box office records and helped instill confidence in the theater-going experience, the surging Delta variant has raised concerns. A recent poll found that audiences are not as confident about returning to theaters now then they were earlier in the year.

The ninth film in the Fast Saga got off to a promising start when it was released internationally in May. F9 was released in the United States on June 25 and immediately impressed with a $70 million opening weekend. The film accomplished another major milestone the following month when it passed $500 million at the global box office, the first pandemic film to do so. Now, new numbers indicate that the Fast & Furious film has passed yet another major milestone.

According to Forbes, Universal is reporting that F9 has passed $700 million at the global box office which is, needless to say, a record since the pandemic began. For added context, this is nearly double what the summer’s second biggest release, Black Widow, earned worldwide. The Marvel film brought in $367 million, which doesn’t factor in the additional $125 million from its simultaneous release on Disney+ Premier Access.

F9’s domestic run was impressive, as it raked in $172.6 million just shy of the Fast & Furious franchise’s last release, Hobbs & Shaw, a pre-pandemic film released in 2019 which brought in $174 million. F9 has been a huge win for theatrical exclusivity and a strong indicator that, for the biggest franchise films, box office totals are close to returning to what they were before the pandemic, especially since F9 made this figure within the confines of a 31-day window.

F9’s record-breaking gross cannot just be attributed to its domestic performance, however, as its run in China netted a total of $216 million. This was lower than expected since audiences reportedly didn’t like the film, which could spell trouble for Fast & Furious 10 releasing in April of 2023. While a recent analysis claims the box office won’t return to pre-pandemic normals until 2024, F9’s gross is an incredibly positive sign that a return to normalcy could come sooner than expected, unless the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant continues to cause concerns. Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be the next major franchise film to test the box office waters.
