The timeline of the Fantastic Beasts series is such that characters in the Harry Potter movies can also appear in them. Albus Dumbledore showed up as a much younger man in The Crimes of Grindelwald, where he was noticeably different compared to the one that Harry and his friends were around.

This Dumbledore had many of the same traits as his older version, but there were some aspects that fans noted seemed to be altered. While it’s difficult to put a finger on these things at first glance, they are worth checking out in greater detail when analyzed further, especially in comparison to the things that remained the same.

10 Different: He Didn’t Have A Way With Words That Allowed Him To Win Arguments

The Ministry has always had some bad departments that cause more hurdles than there should be, and they were sent to Dumbledore in The Crimes of Grindelwald at Hogwarts to strongarm him into confronting Grindelwald.

Here, Dumbledore didn’t display the proficiency with which he could win arguments in the Harry Potter series, instead being clearly agitated and even at a loss of words. He couldn’t skirt by the issue of his unwillingness to fight Grindelwald, which would’ve been easy for his older version who could turn the tables on anyone simply through his conversational skill.

9 Same: The Effortless Execution Of Magic

Dumbledore has never had problems with doing magic, and going by Fantastic Beasts, this held true at all ages. In the movie, the younger Dumbledore was shown doing magic at both Hogwarts and out in the open, both times completing it with ease.

He was able to fully cover the city with a kind of smog that allowed him to remain undetected, looking as if this scale of magic was something anyone could do. At Hogwarts, his skill with magic awestruck students as they would in the future.

8 Different: He Was Willing To Do Magic On A Larger Scale

One of the mistakes the Harry Potter TV series needs to avoid is the uneven execution of magic, which the movies bring forward a lot. Dumbledore is an exception due to his extreme level of powers, although he was always unwilling to execute them unless needed.

This was different for him as a younger man, as Dumbledore shrouded the city in smog, which was a bold move since it meant he was manipulating the weather and the lives of Muggles. The older Dumbledore didn’t prefer to do magic on a big scale, making his younger one’s act a trait that must have changed over the years.

7 Same: His Dedication Toward Students

Having never had children of his own, Albus put his heart and soul into the students that entered Hogwarts. He was always dedicated to these children, to the point where the few times he lost his cool was when students were being mistreated.

He did the same in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, where Dumbledore was shown teaching Defense Against the Dark Art and having an encouraging influence. He was clearly along the lines of Remus Lupin in Prisoner of Azkaban, being an involved teacher who gently guided his students to be better.

6 Different: His Dressing Sense

The older Dumbledore had a strange fascination with beads and stereotypical wizard clothing that didn’t make him blend in with the times. The younger Dumbledore was a class act when it came to dressing sense, seen in well-cut suits that made him look exceptionally dapper.

The biggest takeaway was how unlike a wizard he looked, as even a Muggle would find nothing to discern him from a non-magic person to a wizard. He was both aligned with the style of the 1920s and not eccentric due to the lack of an overgrown beard and hair.

5 Same: His Nice Guy Attitude

The nice guy might be a played-out trope, but Harry Potter has embraced it well in the matter of Dumbledore. Even against those who threatened his life, Dumbledore carried a civil attitude, something that ended up angering his enemies since he was always so polite.

The younger Dumbledore didn’t let people irk him up too much either, despite his expressions making his displeasure clear at times. He remained nice to the people he encountered, whether they wanted to behave aggressively around him or not.

4 Different: He Was More Open To Showing Emotion

The older Dumbledore had the habit of being a mixture of stoic and sardonic against the Ministry of Magic employees in the Harry Potter series, as they regularly antagonized him. He was almost impossible to read for Harry as well, who couldn’t understand if the headmaster’s personality was like this or if he was putting on an act.

The younger Dumbledore attempted to be this way a few times but was unable to be too convincing. For the most part, he didn’t try all that hard to mask his emotions, as he was clear in his displeasure to face Grindelwald, his disappointment with Leta, among other things. He was also open to being vulnerable, as he let his sadness flow when looking into the Mirror of Erised.

3 Same: His Shame Of Revealing Personal Matters

Over the course of the series, Dumbledore kept a lot of secrets, clearly feeling shame when he had to reveal those that were personal. In Fantastic Beasts, he wasn’t happy to discuss his connection to Grindelwald, as he looked extremely ashamed.

The deceased Dumbledore had wept openly in front of Harry when revealing this information, with the younger one portraying his shame along the same vein to Newt with a remorseful sentiment that was hard to miss. There was also that hint of longing in his features that communicated how he hoped things could have been right.

2 Different: He Lacked Conviction

Even when facing moments such as the biggest betrayals in the series, Dumbledore had a kind of conviction that would make his opponents feel fear. This was present in times where conflict wasn’t open either, as Dumbledore’s manner of speaking was such that people would know when they were dismissed.

However, the younger Albus wasn’t like this, lacking that firm hand needed to make others understand what he wanted them to do. This one had to ask, and sometimes plead those who faced him to go away or carry the task he had for them. There was a clear lack of conviction that was gone by the time he had gotten older.

1 Same: The Calming Influence He Has

Whenever he was around Dumbledore, Harry thought he felt at ease, which he was certainly right about. Around the ones that trusted him, Dumbledore held a calming influence that made them accept his offers and sentiments.

Newt Scamander is notorious for being awkward and having trust issues, but he was accommodated well by Dumbledore. Newt showed that he could be honest with Dumbledore and the latter enabled this feeling through the friendly mannerisms he embodied that got many others to let Dumbledore into their trusted circles.
